I have now setup my new home server with WHS2011. Everything is working great except for email alerts........I have triple checked my SMTP settings in WHS2011 and also tested them with an email client on my PC to make sure they are correct but WHS gives an error message "Cannot send the test email alert" "Verify your email settings............".

The email settings are correct so what is the problem? I have tried turning off the Windows Firewall but still no joy.

Does anyone have any idea's?

Thanks

Most ISPs won't allow SMTP relay or SMTP traffic altogether for fearing of spam traffic.

I also have a ReadyNAS Duo which is setup to send alerts and that works OK so my ISP must allow it.

I have a workaround................

My ISP is Virgin Media and they provide 2 email servers one ending @virginmedia.com and the other @ntlworld.com. The @virginmedia.com SMTP server requires SSL and authentication whereas the @ntlworld.com SMTP server requires neither. @ntlworld.com works with WHS2011 email alerts but @virginmedia.com doesn't. Not ideal but at least email alerts work for now.

Are email alerts built into WHS2011?

Yes, you need to turn them on though. From the alerts window click on the bottem left link.
