I've tried searching both on this site as well as other tech forums and have found a lot of people with various surround issues but nobody that has this one, and frankly I'm at a bit of a loss here.

I noticed that I didn't seem to have surround sound, although I haven't touched anything on my HTPC and it was working fine (I think) up to last week. So I went to the windows audio setup panel:

And I do see my 7.1 speakers, but when I click "TEST" it will send the front right, left, center and sub all to the correct speakers, then when it gets to all of the surrounds, it is mapping them to the fronts!

I did a bunch of pretty standard troubleshooting -

rebooted

checked to make sure the nvidia audio device is set by default, it is

updated the nvidia hd audio driver to latest version

checked to make sure all of the surrounds are working fine in the onkyo receiver setup menu, they are

Sounds like an issue with a codec. Haali, ffdshow and lav can have these types of effects if they aren't configured correctly.

Looking at windows update I see that it automatically installed some new nvidia drivers on 4/13. No idea what those were but its possible that is what messed me up. Looks like I can try an earlier restore point if there is one and see if that fixes things.

I tried changing out the HDMI cable and also rolling back to an old restore point, neither fixed the issue.

If someone else is using an nvidia card in their HTPC and it is connected to their receiver via HDMI, can you take a look in your audio properties and see if you have this same setting?

Additional troubleshooting steps attempted -

installed shark codec pack, had no affect

tried a very old nvidia hd audio driver, had no affect

next thing I can try is swapping out the card for another nvidia card

Remove all your nvidia drivers and codecs from the system.

Uninstall them all in programs, then use ccleaner and driversweeper (whatever it's called now) and verify it's gone. Reboot, run driversweeper and ccleaner again, reboot.

Install nvidia 314.22 whql drivers (advanced install, clean install), install codecs. Set up speakers.

Hopefully, win.
