Hi,

I can't quite figure this out, but then I am relatively new to archiving my collection. The disk in question is Resident Evil: Retribution, which contains both versions on the same disk. There is no differentiation in makeMKV, only one title is shown. So I rip it anyway, and while it appears in WMC it cannot play:
Quote:
"Cannot Play Disk. To play this DVD, you must first install a playback application that supports Blu-ray Disk."

However, I can click on it in the folder and Windows Media Player plays it fine (and it's 2D version - pheuff!)

Any thoughts or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I suspect I'm about to learn more...

Thanks.

You must have some sort of mkv splitter installed to play it back in WMC but then again it plays in WMP which would indicate that you do. Have you installed any splitters on your HTPC?

No automatic splitters that I'm aware of smile.gif

I can also play the movie in xbmc, but it plays with English subtitles, despite the Subtitles - None setting.

There is no way an mkv will play on your system without installing the proper splitter.

He could have installed Shark007 codec pack which installs splitter for him without knowing.

Apologies, I thought you were referring to separation of 2D and 3D from the main video file. Yes, of course I do, which you have already acknowledged. What does this have to do with that specific title not playing in WMC? I'm confused.

I am not sure but this is important information to get to the bottom of why that title is not playing in WMC. What splitter are you using? LAV or Haalii or Gabest?

The fact that it plays in WMC but not in WMP is perplexing though.

LAV splitter. Everything else I have ripped and placed in MKV has played fine, this is the only title that I am having trouble with. It will play in everything but WMC.

I've created an iso copy using dvdfab, I'm just setting up to create an h.264/ac3 mkv. During iso copy dvdfab found Cinavia watermark - I wonder if this has anything to do with it? I kind of doubt it, I haven't seen any indication of problem with search. It's the only difference I see in this blu-ray and multiple others I've copied.

Try to see if it will play in MPC-HC or in VLC.

It plays fine in VLC. I don't have MPC-HC.

I just downloaded dvdfab 9 to upgrade. Not sure why people insist on big changes to UI, with the latest version it's like working in a scene from Who Framed Jessica Rabbit. Hate it. There is also apparently a bug, I'm unable to create an mkv from it until I've figured it out. Testing is on hold but I welcome more theories why this isn't working.

mkv file is not a natively supported media format. That's why you need the 3rd party codec packs/splitters. Even with that, playback in WMC is not guaranteed. It largely depends on what you have installed and how it is configured. Play back in WMC is much more limited than desktop applications like WMP or VLC. You don't even need any codec pack if you use VLC.

Foxbat, thank you for the reply. I understand all of this. This movie is #43 from my collection to be ripped and the only one that is not playing. WMC appears to believe that this is a bluray disk. Comparing the contents of this mkv with others I see no difference. The only differentiator (I think) is Cinavia. I'm trying to get through ripping the same movie to mkv with dvdfab for comparison but it continues to crash using Cuda. I started software only rip 3 hours ago, we'll see how this turns out.

Are any of your other rips 3D?

I think you should d/l and install MPC-HC. Then configure it for mkv using LAV Splitter and Decoders. You can force MPC-HC to load from WMC or from MediaBrowser from within WMC.

Total weirdness. I tried to play this title again in WMC and got the same message. By then the dvdfab mkv rip had finished, I added this to a new folder and the folder into WMC. Fired it up, it worked fine (the only difference between the two is vbr from dvdvab, cbr from makemkv). I went back into WMC, now both play fine.

Case closed. Since today is International Workers' Day in Russia, coupled with the foundation for Matroska, I'm thinking it's just a coincidental miracle biggrin.gif
