I didn't realize they were going the route of My Movies with a server/client model.

So if you have movies on two different computers that right now are listed by their network path in MB Configurator those will now be aggregated by installing MB Server on one machine, which does not have to be the same machine that MB is on. Am I reading this correctly? Will the MB Server allow for network shares?

Is there a way to have mb3 classic open movies with mpc-hc?

Yes MBClassic is just a newer version of the old MB, but which continues to support WMC integration - MBTheatre which will provide a stand-alone playback engine is still in development.

Hah... another Plex-like contender in the making...

Except for the fact that this is only windows based at the moment...

Hopefully they will consider porting to Linux at some point in time...

Mine just opens in wmc. Is there a setting in mb3 to make it use other software for playback like in mb2?

Yes, there is a MB config still for the things that need to be setup locally. Client settings of mb classic have to be different, but not for everything. You obviously didn't have to setup your library, a few plugins or preferences locally, but things like gamebrowser would and of course the external player preference in your case.

As Fanta poiints out there is an MBClassic configurator which works in almost the same way as MB2 (particularly for external player set-up)

I am curious in how well the server version of MB3 works out since it means one wouldn't need to have MB on each HTPC. I downloaded the server version but won't have the time to test it out until the weekend. Maybe if those who are testing the Server version can report on how well it is and how quick it is for info, that would be great. I'm going to install this on my new server on WS2012E once I get things set up and squared away.

Definitely something I'll be keeping an eye on, but my system is working too well right now to want to use a beta. Definitely interested in seeing other people's impressions though.

It is pretty great so far though I'd recommend putting clients on your htpc's. Maybe wait awhile though before replacing whatever else you

Speaking of this, keep in mind that you will want to put the server software on a PC with a decent processor if you plan to use the web client at all. The transcoding takes a fair amount of processing power. Originally I had it installed on my Windows Storage Server which had 2 vCPUs and I could only run at "medium" quality settings. I moved it to my desktop PC which has an FX-8120 processor, and now I can watch at "ultra" quality. Transcoding a blu ray will consume about 40-50% of that cpu. I would say a quad core is minimum if the web client is to be used. The CPU requirements are the same as before for any client that does the video processing locally.

Also keep in mind that for Windows 7 machines you can put the server and client on the same machine. Apparently this will not work with Windows 8 last I heard due to the way MS implemented the local loopback, but they are looking into it.

It's in beta, but it likely isn't ready for public consumption yet. There isn't a lot of discussion on it. Apple doesn't make it easy to distribute beta software that you don't want pushed to the store.

While on the topic of client releases. It is my understanding that they wanted to clean up a couple of things on server, and then they were going to focus on MB Theater which is the client that has the built-in player. I am anxious to see how well that works.

Yes Brian - luke has said he intends to move on MBTheatre as soon as he sees a drop in the number of reported issues on Beta Server.

I agree with all this...I have mine installed right now on a win7 vm and it's been great so far. Cpu doesn't get too high but I haven't monitored it much as there haven't been skips or anything.

Heh, ya I can't wait either. Mb classic is fine and all but mb theater should bring a lot of new enhancements.
