But honestly I'm still playing with ideas.
Lol, definitely start a build thread over in the dedicated build section (I'm not stalking but I've seen you there
) and post up your plans. Napkin or 3x5 sketches are acceptable
, the guys over there will give you the low down and help guide you in not making the same mistakes that we have. If your space is attached to the main house, it will be important to consider where it's attached to and planning noise isolation to keep WAF high.
Looking foward to seeing what you're able to come up with.
So far here is the rough idea:
32X24 Feet sized with 11.2 speakers. 150" AT DIY screen + False screen wall 30" out per Denis Erksine recommendation. Construction of double DW + GG for sound. Upper 2/3rd wall dark fabric frame, bottom nice stained wood. Dark Carpet (black or grey with some type of lighter pattern). Colors most likely Navy Blue/Purple fabric which seems to play nice with the stained wood color. I am going with DIY speakers and a baffle wall in front- And double sides (one for each row) which I guess technically might make it 14.2
Dual subs- with tuning after completion. I might go with more subs.. but I already own two. I think I will do some monster DIY sub project after the room is done. Going to do a DIY AT screen with DIY masking.... 2:35:1 screen that masks to 16x9 for sports. Front row 12 feet from screen. 4 theater chairs (Black leather). Second row will be a black leather couch in the center so I can fall asleep or lay down when I am lazy- flanked by two more theater chairs. I playing around with the idea of adding a third row of 8-10 cheap folding seats like a commercial movie theater.. will depend on how much room I have. I want a countertop overlooking the back of the back row... and then a bar in the back. I also plan to make a sound proof AV closet inside the room- and have the component face the side behind the two rows so the lights don't distract much. I will soundproof the HVAC ducts.. Star Ceiling. I plan to do 10ft walls... but in the center where the star ceiling is I can go up to 12ft; it will be flat versus being peaked since this is the bonus room above the garage. I also want a PC desk in the back corner opposite the entrance and next to the 10 foot wet bar... next to the AV closet which will hold the component and my server and HTPC. I'll have three PC's in the theater- desktop, HTPC and Server
and all will be hooked up to the system. I am going to automate the entire room (ceiling, led lights, masking, screen, curtains, sconces, rope lighting, bar LED etc... ) I also plan a DIY digital movie poster that can change movie posters either randomly... or display the "now playing"
Ok... those are basically some of what I am working on
I do love that forum. It's just different than this forum. In this forum there is a prevailing appreciation for modesty, value, and simplicity and a disregard for performance. In that forum there is an infection and prevailing sickness of many members that is uncompromising, excessive, and just plain freakin' awesome. I've seen threads were dudes made really nice square columns in their theaters, only to tear them out immediately and scrap them and make hard to configure round columns over the most minuscule nuances or dislikes. I saw another dude get a mini bobcat excavator and dig out under his house for high enough walls and making a basement. Another guy actually build his theater then decided the walls were too low... tore the whole thing out and raised the roof.
My goal in this project is to do the room as properly as I can at the expense of using great HT gear. I'll have time in the future to upgrade my gear, and my budget is pretty limited. This is going to be a challenge for me to incorporate as many of the great ideas and practices out there- and squeeze every last amount of awesome with a very limited budget. If I am successful I should have a middle class theater than can hang and perhaps surpass a pro theater. I've taken some amazing information and insight from many of the builds there, including Cathan, BigMouthinDC's, Mario, Sandman etc... I always admired Mr Poindexter's theater from back in the day. If I had to chose a theater that gave me the "dream" it was his many years ago. I'm just happy I might actually have the opportunity to do it finally.
