Or not, it's actually a bit strange. I start the process of evaluating a disk and the same message pops up indicating you can still use the app, but then the log message "Evaluation period has expired, shareware functionality unavailable. Failed to open disc"

The odd thing is, according to the About screen my version doesn't expire until July 18.

I've re-installed and tried disks that had previously been ripped, all with the same result.

I just used version 1.81 and it worked fine. That one says it's good until June 18th.

After you posted this I checked mine and the key had expired. I went to the makeMKV forum and grabbed a new key good until July 31. I am on 1.81 also.

Thanks Sammy. I'll downgrade sometime this weekend and try that. I have a feeling this is a bug in 1.8.3. I really am resisting going back to dvdfab, I hope I can work this out.

Good idea. I just extended mine to July 31 too. If anyone else needs the code check here.

I'm sure they will fix it. Then again, I bought it a long time ago, figuring it was worth the money at $50. I would never go back to DVD Fab

Yes, when beta period is over I too will purchase. Since I use an Xbox extender for playback sometimes DVDFab's built-in audio conversion to AC3 turns out to be the better method, but whenever possible I much prefer MakeMKV.

I dropped back to 1.8.1 and put in the July 31 key, all is well again.

I'm using 1.83 with no problems. My last key expired over the weekend so I just updated it.

FYI - no need to convert audio to AC3. Virtually all Blu-Rays include an AC3 soundtrack. Just make sure the box is checked in MakeMKV to include it before converting to mkv.

^^ I've done that, but it's not always the default soundtrack. When that happens I re-rip with DVDFab.

MakeMKV stubbornly keeps everything exactly as it is in the original disc, that I prefer. For example, DVDFab cannot keep PGS subtitles, it converts them to VobSub, a low quality format used in DVD (MakeMKV supported PGS subtitles even when there was no MKV player supporting PGS subtitles in the world eek.gif). Ultimately DVDFab is an encoder.

I bought a license a long time ago as well and have just used and used and used the app...

MakeMKV and AnyDVD HD are the olny two for which I never had any regret paying for...

I find VideoReDo well worth it's cost as well.

Ditto for me on all three, although I haven't purchased MakeMKV yet. However, I will be buying a permanent license as soon as I pay off a few bills. I hate paying for software because I tend to use most apps only a few times for specific purposes for home use. I have no problem buying software that works and is something I'll get a lot of use out of. I rarely use VideoReDo or AnyDVD HD anymore, but they were still worth the cost when I used them on a regular basis. If I can ever find the time I'll be giving VRD a workout when I start editing over 25 years of home videos. eek.gif

MakeMKV 1.83 still works perfectly for me. I just put in the new code the day it came out and the date moved out and everything continued to function normally.

I plan to buy it either as soon as I graduate college and get a real job or when the beta period is over, whichever is sooner. Does anyone know if the license is only good for one computer or can I use it on all my personal computers that I use for ripping? Sometimes I will be ripping on several machines at once and I don't think I could afford 3-4 licenses.

I tried MakeMKV first and thought it was great but after the first couple rips I started having my laptop BSOD on me at least once for every 2 or 3 rips I tried. This happened with multiple disks and nothing else running and since I never could figure out why it was happening, that's when I switched to DVDFab's HD Decryptor which has worked fine for me ever since. At first I was disappointed because I had it in mind that I wanted to keep full uncompressed MKVs of my blu rays but once I started using Fab + Handbrake (CQ 21 for blu rays, 19 for DVDs) I found that I could reduce file sizes by half or more without any noticeable drop in quality at all (at least to my eyes). So that quickly became my standard instead.

Lately I have started using MakeMKV again but not for rips. For blu rays with HD audio tracks that Handbrake won't pass through (ie PCM and TrueHD instead of DTS-HD) I run the index.bdmv file from BDMV folder created by Fab through MakeMKV so I can save those audio tracks and then use MKVmerge to merge them with the Handbrake compressed video. Which I dunno, may not be the best method for keeping those tracks and saving them back w/the Handbrake video but it works well enough for me. And it hasn't caused my laptop to crash yet on first dozen or so movies in my collection I've tried this method on. (Which conned me into thinking that whatever my problem was on rips before maybe there had been some kind of driver update or something that had fixed it. So I held my breath and tried again to rip with it and sure enough it crashed 5 minutes in.)

MakeMKV is a great tool and if you asked me when I first started I'd have been more than happy to pay $50 for it. But the way it worked out I'm glad I found Fab+Handbrake instead. (And FYI, I haven't heard of anyone else having the same experience w/MakeMKV that I've had and I'm not trying to turn anyone against it either. Just relaying my own experience is all.)

Did you try to get the new key from the link on the forum on their website?

Im new to MakeMKV but From what I've read then they update keys before they expire so it's entirely possible that this is it and its now a paid product.

I'm not against paying for peoples hard work, but to be honest I havent used MakeMKV enough and I feel the lack of updates to their users makes it tough to justify a $50 investment. They could've at least told us "New key coming soon" or "The rides over folks, pay up". Either way is better than just saying nothing.

lol. Did you have it installed before? If so you need to remove the old version first.

Only the current beta works- and previous expired will stop working.

Had the most current on both machines with the current key (ie one that just expired). One said that my trial was over and wouldn't work, the other one said trial was over but would "continue to work for a few days." It was strange. Oh well, I was happy to pay the $50, I had been meaning to anyways.
