I am going to rebuild my WHS2011 server into a case that can accommodate more HDD's, I have a shortlist between Fractal Design ARC Midi R2 and Fractal Design Define R4 the price difference is only £10 between them. Does anyone have experience using either case, I am particularly interested in noise level and cooling capability as I will have 8 HDD's in the case.

Thanks

David

Not sure if Newegg ships to where you are, but they have a nice deal on the Fractal Design Define R4 (I just paid $79.99 for it, shipped)

Reviews are stellar on that case, and the video I saw of it's features is quite nice.

I have started to become disillusioned with Newegg. Their customer service has taken a dive recently. I recently tried to call about an order - I placed two by accident. The first order took over an hour to appear in my Recent Orders area, so I figured I messed up. I ordered again and then a few minutes later the first order showed up. I tried to cancel it, but one of the two items was from their new Marketplace (which I hate) and I cannot just cancel that...I just email the vendor. The other item I immediately canceled but tried to call to get them to do it before they charged my card and then had to refund. No luck, never did get a human either time I called.

I always used Newegg for their customer service. They cost a little more than other places, but it was worth it. I now get equal to, or better service, from Amazon...and better prices there too.

I have the Rosewill RSV-4500 and I love it as a server chassis, holds 15 HDD's. Currently listed with a $30 rebate.

It's a big case (depth), at the same time, the Fractal cases are large as well (wide - I got to see them at a Micro Center, and was surprised how big they were).

The NZXT cases (Source 210, 220) are actually decent if you want to stick to a low budget. The 220 has a mesh front for better airflow.

I suppose it'll come down to where you plan to put the server, and if you want a tower case vs rack.

I went with this one and am happy with it. I had to replace the fans in the drive bays, but it was easy.

I show how to replace those two fans in this thread:

Thanks for the responses so far but maybe I wasn't clear on my question.........I need to decide between the two cases in post 1, I have looked at other cases but they don't match my requirements or budget. I have also seen the Fractal Design Define R3 for a knock down price so that is now also a contender.

The MIDI should run cooler but the R4 will be near silent (differences in their front panels). You can't beat the price on the R4. I paid $109 in the beginning of the year for it. The case has tons of space and is very roomy. So I would go with R4. smile.gif

+1 on the Fractal Design. I have the R4 for my WHS, and it's great. Almost silent with tons of room. Looks great too.

To me, personally, the ARC Midi, and the Define R4 are essentially the same case.
The biggest difference is that the Define has the front door, and better/more soundproofing which it sounds like is your primary concern.

Both cases also offer windowed options, at the expense of soundproofing materials.

Check out the Anandtech review here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6102/fractal-design-define-r4-case-review-evolution-not-revolution

I've had my eye on these cases for a while myself in addition to the Core 3000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352026 (with only 6 HDD spots).

If it wasn't for my own requirement of at least 3 5.25 bays for my desktop, I would've pulled the trigger on one of these myself.
