Came across this card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131500

Looks nice but I am worried about heat in a relatively cramped HTPC case.

Can anyone suggest a card with similar specs (Nvidia or AMD - does not matter) with fans that would be silent during HTPC use. Loud fans during gaming are OK.

Put your HTPC in an enclosed and mechanically ventilated cabinet. I have mine in an enclosed cabinet with four 120 mm Nexus Real Silent case fans driven by a 120 to 12 v power brick. I cannot hear it when the HTPC is on as the dB level of the cabinet is real low and I cannot hear the HTPC either. When there is no audio coming from the AVR in that same cabinet, the fans are only audible if you are standing right next to the cabinet.

It's a good solution but unworkable since it will involve major rebuilding of my HT room. Right now I have an open AV rack, which is why I need silent components.

(Then again, right now I use old PS3 for 3D playback and that thing is like a helicopter) smile.gif

I have an Asus GT 430 Nvidea which is passively cooled. It is not as robust as the card linked above but it does not run excessively hot, even after 2 hours of a blu-ray rip at the medium level of MadVR which is the highest level that card supports.

One thing to consider with the card you have linked is card height. It looks to be a full height card and the heat tube/sync extends above the height of the bracket and beyond the footprint of the PCI buss below. This is a good thing for cooling but might not fit in your case. From newegg's listing the card is 7.99" x 4.37" x 1.5" which is pretty big.

Another thing to consider with a passive card, or any card for that matter is how to get the heat out of your case silently. My case is only ventilated by the PSU fan but it does okay although it is a bit stuffy in there.

Any of the following have quiet coolers, with similar performance:
All come with software that allow the fan profiles to be customised so that they will be near silent under normal HTPC duties, and still reasonably quiet when gaming.

Need to check whether they will fit in your case though.
