I'm pretty noob at headphones so I figured I'd ask some smarter people than me about it. Anyone use headphones ?

What is a good set a headphones these days ? Worth it ?

My budget is probably in the high value segment $200 or less.

Honestly I don't know much about headphones but that I seem to need them according to my wife . I'd like to be able to use them on the theater system and also ipad3 if possible.

Is surround sound viable ? Or should I just grab a decent pair of stereo headphones ?

The only 7.1 headphone available is the one from Sony with HDMI connection. It retails about $400 and only sold in Japan but you can find them on eBay or Amazon for around $300 or so imported.

Otherwise, you can get one of those turtle beach 5.1 gaming head phones that uses optical connection.

Surround sound headphones that have a speaker for each location suck. You end up with a bunch of tiny crappy speakers with little separation. The best bet is to get some really good stereo headphones and then use Dolby Headphone processing. I have some nice Sennheiser headphones and an Astro mixer.

I recently started looking into headphones & could not find a related sub-forum on avsforum.com.

But I came across this forum a few times when searching & it seems pretty active. Here's a link to their recommendation sub-forum.

And here's their main forum page.

Perhaps something over there will be helpful.

Agree. I use Sennheiser wireless headphones too, RS180, they work great and the Dolby Headphone processing in my Marantz does a good job. The ability to crank up the volume (which the family never lets me do with the speakers) compensates for the lack of proper 7.1. smile.gif

I did see that, but it is a long single thread. I was looking for a sub-forum where you can start a new thread.

I don't even know if I have processing in my AVR for that. My AVR is fairly modern and decent (Denon AVR3312 IC)

So it sounds like just 2.0 stereo headphones is the way to go. Wired or wireless ? Suggestion for a high value (good sound + good price) option ?

Wired is of course always preferable because wireless is always sensitive to interference. So go wired if the cord doesn't bother you.

For wireless, Sennheiser's RS170/180 and above are a great choice, they use a digital uncompressed wireless protocol much superior to the FM technology of cheaper models.

A good pair of headphones in your budget are the Sennheiser HD598's. Haven't tried them for movies but they sound great for their price for music. They come with a really long cord so I can easily plug it into my AVR and listen to them from my couch.

I have a pair of Sennheiser 518 I use for listening to movies late at night. For under $100 they are excellent.

I'm not real familiar with that Head-Fi forum. Why would it be unlikely to be helpful?

Depends. Most cheap, e.g. around $100, wireless will have hissing or interferences. Good ones use digital transfer and cost more.

How about for education or reviews ?

I don't understand the differences well enough to feel confident in a purchase

I'm interested in something like this. Can you wear them laying down ? Head on pillow ?

I'm weighing if this (wireless) is worth the extra over a pair of $50 wired that probably sound just as good.
