had a asus xonar dg sound card on my old motherboard and was pci got a new motherboard and doesnt have any pci slots so time for a new sound card. have read around while researching sound cards seems alot of people say that creative isnt horrible like it was for a while so started looking at their sound cards and i just dont know what to get. having a headphone amp would be nice i do want to get nice headphones sometime in the near future wont be 600ohm or anything but i know it makes a difference and will also be used for my emotiva airmotiv 4 speakers for games movies music. would like to be able to use rca to connect my speakers to the sound card instead of 3.5mm to rca (does that or doesnt that matter or make a diffence).

after looking at what would be useful and wasteful feature wise for me i have settled on 4 cards and just dont know what to get. would like to spend as little as possible but want to get something i wont feel like i really need to upgrade anytime soon you guys know how the upgraditis is. if you have any experience or knowledge with any of the products please chime in and let me know what you think smile.gif

the 4 cards are

Xonar DGX PCI e version of the card i had before wasnt a bad little card as long as i had it and has a headphone amp

SOUND BLASTER Z http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-z

SOUND BLASTER X-FI TITANIUM HD http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-x-fi-titanium-hd

Xonar Essence STX most expensive on the list buy about $50 almost if not $200 if any of the others are close in sound quality then not all that interested in this though i love the input outputs it has http://www.asus.com/us/Sound_Cards_and_DigitaltoAnalog_Converters/Xonar_DGX/

thanks for any and all help with this decision biggrin.gif

I was going to buy the Xonar Essence STX based on reviews from COMPUTERAUDIOPHILE.com and SteveHoffman.TV but now I just connect USB to my pre/rpo and HDMI to pre/pro for MC.

I may still get it eventually for recording records. If I needed a card w/DAC I would get it.

I haven't compared to the lower price options. In my old PC I have been using an mAudio Revolution card which is fine for COAX out but it was not in the same class as some of the higher price cards I compared when using the DAC on the card.

Audio Cards from computer audiophile recommended list:

Lynx Studio Technology AES16 (PCI) & AES16e (PCIe) $625, $699
Site (AES16) (Listed 3/07/2010) | Site (AES16e) (Listed 3/07/2010)

RME Hammerfall DSP 9632 (PCI) $499
Site (Listed 3/07/2010)

ASUS Xonar Essence STX (PCIe) & ST (PCI) $199
Review (12/17/2010) | Site

SOtM tX-USB (PCI) $339
Article (06/23/2011) | Site
Note: Not an audio card

SOtM In-Line SATA Power Noise Filter $65

If I'm not mistaken all of those on that CA list were topped by the ESI Juli@ XTE, the one I have.

that is a pretty neat card but not what i am looking for and doesnt have any kind of headphone amplification. also the reason i am looking at the cards i am trying to choose between is they can be bought from newegg i am planning on picking the sound card and a couple other thing up from there on my newegg credit .

thanks for the input though

does anyone else have any thoughts or impressions of the originally mentioned sound cards?

after researching further on the 4 on my original list the dgx is off i want something i wont feel like needs upgrading soon, and the creative titanium is off as well for how old it is and quite a few people saying the much newer Z series is better so it is down to the

SOUND BLASTER Z http://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-z
the cheaper of the 2 buy about half especially when on sale

Xonar Essence STX http://www.asus.com/us/Sound_Cards_and_DigitaltoAnalog_Converters/Xonar_Essence_STX/
was suprised to see this thing dates back to 2009 which does bother me that the driver support will be weak and that asus doesnt seem to care about sound cards anymore though they have been known to make excellent ones.

what between the 2 what do you guys think how big of a difference in sound quality will there be have seen alot of people say the stx is weak in gaming and movies which is 2/3 what it will be used for but excellent for music
