There's suppose to be a 6TB from them as well coming soon, and by 2020 20 TB if they get passed some physical issues! I wonder how long is the shelf life of this technology, spinning platters millimeters apart from each other travelling at high speeds

Either way it's very exciting news to say the lease,

Dan

Hitachi developed a helium filled technology that's due soon too. That's why WD wanted to buy them so bad. I just hope WD doesn't ruin Hitachi in the process.

Maybe this will cause hard drive prices to finally fall. 4TB drives have been $150+ for nearly two years and we're well past the "shortage" of a couple years ago.

I think falling prices on old pc tech is nearly automatic. 2TB and 3TB and 4TB will be cheaper when we have 5TB and 6TB drives.

I know I read about the helium filled technology, but I don't recall where the heck I seen it...I'm going to a history check and see if I find any info once I get home.

A laser shoots into a crystal cube for instance and it restructures it on a molecular level. I'll see if I can dig up an old posting of it. I really don't know if the project was scrapped or not though.

I would be interested in reading about that. I see they are still playing with HAMR and also HELIUM these days.. but I never heard about that.

RAID protection is only for failed drives. That's it. It's no replacement for a proper backup.

Yea that's the one. It's just been so long since I first read on it that I couldn't remember clearly the details.

I have no heard too much news about prices on these new tech HDD's but I am hoping it's inevitable that standard drives drop in price. $99 4TB would be ultra sweet! biggrin.gif
