Years ago, I remember seeing a demo of kaleidescape and being blown away. I was curious what people here like. Currently I'm just using Mezzmo connected to my Oppo which gets me to my files but not very interesting and you kind of have to know what you are looking for to get the show or movie you want quickly.
Do you want to use programs like madvr or ffdshow if you have these?
The closest to Kaleidascape is Plex or MediaBrowser. MediaBrowser shows some promise but just isn't quite there yet. Plex on the other hand is an awesome, awesome ecosystem on it's own.
I run the Plex Media Server on one of the servers at home, and stream all my HD movies and shows around the house with various clients, and to my tablet/mobile when away from home. The web client comes in handy as well, use it regularly at work to kill time when it's slow.
I've got an HTPC running PlexHomeTheater in the living room for the movie-night experience (mainly for the DTS-MA/TrueHD support) and I've also got a Google TV device running Plex there, which I use most of the time. I've got another GTV device in the bedroom, a small PlexHomeTheater setup in the office and a Roku in the guest room, all running Plex, everything synced together and no problem resuming from where you were, in whatever client you prefer.
I've been a cordcutter for a long time, but I really didn't come to enjoy that status until I discovered Plex.
Mediabrowser theater can support MADVR and reclock and YS filter. Plex and XBMC can not.
Lots of working being done on the mediabrowser player as we speak (it's beta only still) and the clear goal is for it to rise above the others as superior.
MeediOS also can do MADVR.
You'll need an external player in Plex or XBMC to go MPC-HC. Otherwise your stuck with basic playback.
