Waiting for a nice game bundle on a 270X for $199. Much better than no game and $250 last month wink.gif

the Asus DC2OC 290X, one of the best reviewed 290x, is $599 now @NE. It was 569 on sale last week. too bad its still $699 @NE.ca

note: the post above is my opinion. as such, when reading any recommendations from me, please do you research and seek out other recommendations and make up your own mind on your next course of action. i mean, most reasonable adults should know that, but it seems this should be stated anyways.

It's going to drop $200 when the new one hits the streets soon.

AMD has a R9 295X2 coming out. Yes you read that right. It's two R295's on the same card. eek.gif dual-Hawaii's biggrin.gif

This card might actually be fully enabled with all 2,816 stream processors active, and all running at 1.0 GHz or higher – essentially slapping two R9 290's overclocked on a single PCB eek.gif

Asus has already committed to a dual Hawaii Ares III with water cooling (basically two R290's) as well.

I could only imagine the PSU requirements for these new cards. They come with their own water cooler tongue.gif

This is the story of my life. I still am waiting. I have a feeling the market will flood with them now that bitcoining is dying.

I am in a unique position though. I have 3 GPU cards in my machines, I keep using my old trusty 6870 X2 card which works fine for madVR and most games.

I told my business partner I would grab him a R9 270X and install it in his office PC when I get a good deal as well. He has a 6850 now, and plays a good deal of flight sims and some gaming.

Price will come down also because of the GTX780Ti taking back the lead, they need to give more performance per $ again

I like Nvidia for gaming. I wish they just moved in for the kill and dropped prices about 10%. Seems like nvidia is always slightly more expensive per dollar of performance- they could really drop the hammer on AMD if they wanted to line up and go head to head. I never understood why they do not.

My perception from years ago was always that Nvidia was worth a small premium because of the drivers and consistency - but AMD has really stepped up recently and the driver issues of old days are nearly all gone. In today's modern GPU market I'm not sure Nvidia is worth any premium at all anymore. I'd probably almost suggest the opposite. They really need to line up head to head if they want to take back the market. They have gotten lucky that Bitcoining has driven up the price of the AMD cards so that for gaming they are competitive compared to AMD inflated prices - but if AMD does it's usual dance and the prices start dropping the card to get is clearly going to be an AMD again. I'd love to see the 750ti drop $25 in price, and see the higher cards drop $50. I have a feeling AMD is about to do that so they might have to do it. I'm expecting R9 270X's for $179 soon- Nvidia has no answer for that currently. $129 R7 265's are a no brainer over a 750ti as well. I'm curious to see what the new R9 280 sells for...

GTX780Ti is a nice card but I am not sure it would best a R9 295X2.

People are now talking about Radeon cards for what? For HTPCs or heavy games?

Same things as always:

More performance per dollar spent
Inherently better performance on MadVR
0-255 black level over HDMI

It will be an energy pig that gets hot and is very weak in a few years. At that time it won't upscale 4k. It won't have HDMI2.0. Would you actually want it ?

I would not.

That's just how PC works.

I have a $400 GPU card here (3870 X2 and a 4870 X2) from an old gaming machine I have no clue what to do with. I'll probably throw it in the trash. It does not do DTS or DD HD audio.

Low I think. You usually might get one from the upper level but lower clock series. A 7790 is going to run hard - it's a 7700 series jacked up the to 90 level (50>70>90>90ghz editiion) and from my experiene you don't see those in single slot low profile cards. They are bigger.

You would be more likely to fine a 7850 or 7950 I think. More powerful at the same time too. How about a Nvidia 750ti ?

You mean low profile as in single slot ? Or low profile as in half height ? They are different. I can help you if I know more.

Still crazy, IMO. I bought a 7950 at the end of last year for $200 (minus another $10 AR). 79xx were classed as Never Settle Forever Gold as well.

The stupid R7/R9 business has just let to unnecessary overpricing of the newer cards frown.gif 270X should be like $160 tops ($150 AR range) if you ask me. Other than Hawaii, it's been a total fail for the consumer--pretty much the extra pricing is just paying for the marketing of these "new" cards.

Has AMD fully fixed their micro stuttering yet?

What is the MSRP going to be on this anyway? Under $1k I hope? (Not that I'd be buying one but you get what I mean.)

Right now the 270X is $189 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=DDVl2LIWEeOnMrb8dtOeEw0_gTM-3_aTS_0_0&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16814202081&cm_sp=

I have my eyes out for the right one at $179. I'm gonna buy two.

For both of my 3yo HTPCs i need a full height and half height card.

My wife finally after 3 years noticed "the stutter" LOL

Honestly the half height card only needs to be able to do 5.1, Bluray and 3D over HDMI without the stutter.

The full height card needs to do the same.

Both cases can dual slots without issue.

Figured this would be a cheaper alternative than a new processor, mobo combo.

On a thread I started regarding an AMD alternative to an I5-3570k for my first HTPC using madvr for DVD upscaling, I was recommended an i3-4130 along with a Radeon 7790. I looked at Newegg and there were only 3 options, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600423073&IsNodeId=1, now I am not ready to buy any component as I'm just researching. What would be a good current alternative to the Radeon 7790. I understand that whatever recommendations are offered here will change once I am ready to purchase all the components, so I will have to revisit this later on.

My HTPC will only be used to view my old DVD rips as well as Blu-rays that I currently own and will eventually buy. No gaming at all and currently no live TV (I might in about 2-3 when I move over to Norther Ireland from the states). If 4k does become the norm I would need a card that handles that as well, but once again I might to revisit this topic in the future.

So basically a card to be used with madvr at full settings for DVD and Blu-Ray. As a side question, would a better cpu that the i3-4130 be better suited for what I am looking for.

I hope I have not diverted the thread off topic. Thanks in advance, I have learned much in my research but something new always comes up that requires me to ask for help.

260x is a 7790
260 not x is 7770
265/265x is better than 7790 (based on core of 7850)
270 is a 7870
270x is 7870ghz

Any R7 260X card should be a good fit for you. Look for one on sale for $100.

For CF or for two PCs? Also that link takes me to a $110 260X and not a $190 270X? What's astonishing is that R9 280s sell for $300 right now eek.gif That's $100 more than 7950s sold for a 4-5 months ago (and what I bought mine at).

LOL what? You've got to be kidding. 290x has over 2x the shaders, twice the ROPs, and nearly twice the memory bandwidth. What would you have to OC a Pitcairn to, to get to Hawaii levels? 2.5-3Ghz? LOL, good luck with that. 7970/280x (Tahiti) overclocked can't get that fast, I dunno how you think a 270 is going to get anywhere close to a 290x?

I picked up on his mistake too but I was too lazy to comment tongue.gif I just assumed he meant 7870 and not 290X. 290X is operating in a totally different territory.

What would you need a $750 gpu for? R9 270x can already play everything at high/ultra, and 280x can play everything at ultra.
