I have HDHomeRun Prime running nicely thru wmc and using HDHRFling to send it to my Roku. What I'm missing is I want to record TV shows and play them on the Roku ??? How does that work ?? I've been advised that Fling is strictly for live TV and wmc does not work with Roku ???
If you use Plex and setup a recorded tv shows section pointing to where your recorded shows end up, Plex will add the recorded shows to your library and play them nicely. The only trouble is that when WMC records the show it does not name it properly for Plex to be able to see the file. Plex needs the file to be name with season and episode info and the it will quickly find your recorded show and cover art.
You can do this manually or you can use a program like MCEBuddy that will do it for you as well as cut out the commercials.
BTW there is also a hdhomerun viewer plug in available that will allow to do live tv thru Plex as well. There is also HD Surfer but that is a little bit more involved. Check out the Plex forums channel development area for that.
That's true pittsoccer33 if you add the location of your recordings to the Home Movies section as you show. If you want the cover art for the show all you have to do is rename the file with show name sXX eXX and it will pop right up once the folder rescans.
Sometime since I took those I figured out how to change the library name from generic HOME MOVIES to DVR
Thats where I put the random, one off things like National Geographic and Smithsonian programs. I do exactly like you say for newer tv shows - rename them, cut out the commercials, and occasionally convert to H264.
If the OP did those things it would show up much prettier and not require the PC to transcode.
You can achieve the same thing with Media Browser 3.
Is your server running? Is it set to the default port in settings? Did you open that port in your router? Did you log in your plex account on the server in settings?
Usually Plex does some of this for you but I haven't had to trouble shoot for a while so just some things to look at.
I was able to sign in and I found the access to the help but I know very little about setting up or changing the settings in the router. I may need to try your suggestion ... media browser 3 .. It will send the reordings to Roku ???
Connecting your server to Plex allows you to stream media outside your home network.
Signed in as gtuck2119@hotmail... Signed in to Plex
You have successfully signed your server in to Plex, but we were unable to reach it from outside your network.
If you would like to enable this now, you will need to configure your router or firewall to allow Plex to contact your server. Please refer to our Connecting a Server article for more information.
Manually specify port
Enable this if automatic mapping fails. You will need to configure your router. Detailed instructions are available here.
You could usually find tutorials on youtube to figure out how to open a port on your router. You either open 32400 or a number you decide to assign for a port number. Then you fill in that port number where the help section points out.
In any event that would be to access your server outside of your home. You may be able to already access Plex from inside your network.
For either Plex or MB3 you need the Client channel on the ROKU. Once you add the appropriate file locations to movies and tv shows you will have access on the ROKU.
We're sorry, but we can't reach this server. What is this ????
Again, I'm not interested in "outside" my network, just from my PC to Roku. Got Plex setup onRoku "authorized" but can't seem to get the recorded shows from my PC HD to the Plex
One thing that help me immensely was to change the way WMC names the files. I've got mine to show the episode name instead of that useless date/time stamp (file has a date anyway). So they're very easy to read and sort in Plex.
I did add Recorded TV as a Home Movies folder. Don't know if that's still necessary or not, but it was recommended several places, and it worked.
...If you leave the file name as is PLEX will see it in that section and it will typically grab an image from the video itself to use as a video thumb. If you have it in a TV section without renaming, PLEX will not see it until it is renamed with season and episode naming scheme. Once renamed it pulls up show info and cover art.
Since you mention that you changed how WMC saves the file name (I'm curious about this too) you may be getting better cover art, but I suspect your getting a clip from the video.
You're right, I'm only getting a clip. I can see from the PLEX naming requirements that my names are still not in the right format for PLEX to recognize. But it's enough at least that the title and episode are readable. I did the registry change here, not the bulk renaming service, which probably would make them work with PLEX. The registry change below only affects new recordings, so you'll have a mix of old style and new names for a while unless you edit them yourself. I've been running with that change for several months already, so nearly all mine are the new format now.
