EDID Override to get 5.1 audio

I have a Acer H236HL monitor..., but I also have a digital audio decoder, that extracts the audio, from the hdmi cable.
I just want to hack the EDID for the monitor to allow it to be 5.1. I thought the dumb decoder was going to do that for me. But still 2-ch.
I've seen lots of threads for EDID hacking that is very complicated. Anything easier?

I have Nvidia drivers.
Geforce GT 200

If not easier... than, can I just replace with a close one that is known to be 5.1. If so, where do I find?

Edit: After all these years, this should just be easily selectable in software options!

So I tried SourceForge.net/projects/edideditor but I kept getting errors from it.
