DIY MiniDSP alternative?

I would like to build a pc that at a minimum can simply run equalizer apo so i can use rew to shape the analog signal the would come in from the mic jack and output it through the headphone jack.

My cable box has RCA L and R outputs that i currently connect directly to an old all in one tape/cd deck that has L and R RCA also. I figure i can use rca to headphone jack cables if needed.

What are my option that are cheaper than a minidsp? If I don't have any, I'll just grab a minidsp, I just thought I'd be a fun little project.

It only took me the morning to get my laptop working with equalizer apo to output music. Now I need to figure out how to use the mic port to get the cable box sound playing through the laptop and into my "amp".

Well, it would have worked by my current laptop has no line in/mic jack. Going to have to find a little something that does and then it looks like I got me a home grown minidsp!

I've been using Equalizer APO with my HTPC for all output and have been very pleased.
I hope your experiment was ultimately successful.

It has been, I have been watching ebay to find a laptop that has a busted screen which has a headphone jack and a mic/line in along with HDMI(for later on). At a minimum, I'll use it as a lights out mini dsp and once a get an avr I can build in some htpc features. I'm glad to hear you are liking E-APO, its awesome.
