Okay so now I have seen the problems with the sonic filters discussed in the other thread - mainly around rendering red etc.

Time to try something else. And the seemly best recommended other product is WinDVD4.

On intervideo's website they are currently offering good coupons / upgrades / trade-in's to bring that high price on WinDVD platinum down to a reasonable level.

One thing I noticed is that they are making a big deal about the 96/24 audio support, for the few cards out there that can support it (audigy 2, M-audio etc.)

Does it really make a big difference to the audio playback if you have the hardware for this? Is the investment in a 96/24 card worthwhile?

Also WinDVD platinum is not listed on the regular zoomplayer filter list, do these filters work well with Zoomplayer? Without massive tweeking and graph building? If that is the case is the 96/24 features in the software itself, or in the audio filters? Example - if I am using the audio filter in Zoomplayer do the 96/24 features work?

Thanks,

- Rick

you can download the windvd plat trial and try it out for yourself. I believe that using zoomplayer to playback CD's is broken due to some problem with microsoft. So you wont get 96/24 playback (or anyplayback) within zoomplayer for cd music.

Thanks.

Does the 96/24 do anything for movie soundtracks in DD/DTS? This is new to me...

it matters only for analog 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 output (sound card and software do the decoding). SPDIF should not care about bitrate (receiver does the decoding).

yes it does here too with the windvd application. But if you try and use the windvd audio filters under zoomplayer you will get an error message.
