I work at BestBuy and we currently have dropped our price of the WD 120GB w/ 8MB cache to $99 and some stores have it advertised at $79. Hope this can make some of your lives easier. Go quick before the price changes. If they are out of stock ask about Customer Fulfillment... just dont mention me.

Man, I got duped into buying the 180GB for $120 after rebates and discounts at Dell... What a chump I am. :)

And you may ask yourself well how did I get here?
And you may ask yourself am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say to yourself: What have I done?!

As posted at www.hot-deals.org :
___________________________________________
Problem with purchasing Western Digital hard drives from BestBuy: I heard there is an issue with Western Digital hard drives sold by BestBuy. There have been a number of customers who reportedly had received incorrect drives in the box, such as bad Seagate, Quantum, and Maxtor drives. If you purchase a Western Digital drive at BestBuy be sure to open the box and compare the serial number with the one written on the box with the one on the drive, even if the box is shrink wrapped. Also the drive should be packed in a static bag with foam padding securing the drive in the box. This problem is occuring either at the distributor level or at the local store level, however it has not been linked to one specific BestBuy location. At this time, Western Digital has acknologed this issue because they have received numerous complaints from BestBuy customers. Western Digital Corp is currently checking serial numbers and investigating BestBuy's sale of their drives. BestBuy corporate refused assistance to a Hot Deals Club visitor who purchased one of the Western Digital drives that turned out to be a used old hard drive. BestBuy has not yet commented on whether any problem exists in their sale of Western Digital hard drives. Note that it is currently unknown whether the problem lies with BestBuy or with Western Digital, but with several complaints received by me, I do believe there is a problem.

I think what happens is the people at customer service return a HDD but dont check with the technicians to find out if its the correct product in the box. Then when they resell it, the customer gets screwed, albeit unintentionally.

If you buy the drive just make sure you open it at the counter when you buy it so there are no problems.

Then again, I bought two and they were both fine.

Be sure to take a closer look at the wrapping to make sure it's factory wrapping. This time I bought a 80GB from BB only to find a stack of paper inside. When I go back there, the manager are all piss off and they bring out another box that's also fill with paper. The sales told me that the wrapping should have maxtor logo all over it if it's from factory, the one I have is re-wrap by someone else. Since it's wrap so nice, the staff at BB just put it back in the rack to sell without inspecting it.

PretzelB -

You have to find the actual item (at full price $159.99). When you do, you'll then see the $80 mail in rebate link.

P.S. Hello from Arlington :)

Trouble with those darn rebates is it usually limits you to 1 drive. Building a server so I need 4 of them.

Also if you are worried about the limits on rebates to the same address, you can always "invent" apartment numbers for your house. Works great, and any regular mailman assumes the bogus apartment number is a misprint

You know, for $125 you can get the Seagate Barracuda V 120GB which is ultra-quiet. I have one of these, and I can't believe how silent it is. I've never heard a more quiet hard drive than this thing. I have a WD1200JB in another machine and it is A LOT noiser.

Unless something has changed, there is no rebate for the 120GB WD at BestBuy right now. The regular price has been dropped to 99, and some stores have a tag up on the shelf that says 79. I got two of them this week for 79 each.

Still not seeing it for BestBuy but I guess CompUSA is good enough. I wish the Seagates would go down in price like this.

I got my Seagate 120GB Barracuda ATA V at the Dell Parts & Upgrades store. Dell part # A0062437

But if you don't own a Dell, you should be able to find a similiar price for this drive on the net. This is the most quiet IDE hard drive available as far as I know.

IIRC, you don't have to own a Dell to order parts from them. You can also do a search on Yahoo for dell coupons and get some great coupon codes (free shipping, 10% off, etc.).

Fry's Electronics is selling the Maxtor 120 GB HD for
$78.99 after $40 rebate (In store price), or
$89.99 after $40 rebate over the net. http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3593544

I also own the Seagate Barracuda, and I can vouch for how quiet it is, but a video server can be put in another room, or a closet, or even the garage, so quiet is less of an issue.

That drive at Fry's is the 2 MB buffer version with a 1-year warranty. The one at Circuit City and Best Buy is the "special edition" 8 MB buffer version, 3-year warranty.

Gosh, just two days ago, Dell was having a 20% sale on their peripherals. You could pick up a 120GB Seagate Baracuda V 7200RPM for ~$100 + tax (free shipping). Total is about $108 shipped. Regular price is $125.34 + tax + shipping. Go to Small Business->Peripherals->Data Storage->Desktop Harddrives->61 GB and Above. Keep watching the Dell website for discounts and promotions. They have them quite often.

as for noise, I just had a recent first-hand experience with both the WD and the Seagate. The Seagate is quieter. The WD isn't too bad. Granted, I was comapring 30GB drives.
