Here is the basic info about the next Creators Update, which will be released on October 17th. As is the case, Windows Insiders get it earlier. The update focuses on gaming features and mixed reality, because it will launch right before the holiday sales season, when those two things are going to be the big focus points of the new hardware coming out. Originally, we were told that the update would bring HDR improvements to PCs for the plethora of HDR monitors that were going to be launched in the holiday sales period, to go with the new Intel and AMD hardware that is going to come at that time. Unfortunately, HDR is going to be delayed until next year, as monitor makers have moved their releases to late 2018, to allow the hardware and software development to synchronize enough to make it palatable for consumers and professionals. We all know how non-functional HDR is at this time and with both HDMI and DP getting updates for HDR and UHD+ resolutions, we're not at a point where things really work, so this is to be expected.

The latest Windows 10 cumulative update has a faulty system print server patch in it, so if anyone is using their HTPC for double-duty as a PC, this is why your printer is no longer functional. Simply uninstall the update and the printer should be functional again.

The FCU is now rolling out for Windows Insiders and will go wide on the 17th. It will be pre-installed on all new hardware shipping for the holiday sales.

The FCU is now available. You can install it manually by going to the Microsoft Update site or wait for it to roll out to your system via the Windows Update network. From what is on the official Microsoft blogs, it seems that the HDR switching did not make the final cut (or it was snuck in there unofficially), so you can expect that to come in the seasonal updates that roll out next year, when HDR monitors hit the market after CES and Computex. There really isn't anything in this update that is an essential upgrade for anything HTPC or media related, so you might as well just wait for it to roll out to your systems via Windows Update. As always, make sure you are fully updated with drivers before you do install it.
