Windows 10 Creator Update Thread

The Windows 10 Creator Update goes out over the Update Service next month, but you can download and install it now via the Windows 10 Update Assistant, that I have linked to below this blurb. This update brings HDR video to Windows, but you'll likely need updated drivers and streaming apps to support it. To use HDR, you'll obviously need an HDR UHDTV or one of the new HDR monitors being unveiled at Computex this year.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=799445

This thread is for us to discuss the update after it's released (or you install it) and later in the year, when we've got HDR monitors to play with.

The link no longer let you upgrade to Creators update. Looks like we either have to sign in for insiders program or wait for our turns after 4/11.

There's an update option that pops up in the Updates panel, but it's not instant. If you click on it, your PC gets added to the list of those who want it early, so you might get it a week or more in advance, depending on when they slip it to your machine. I wouldn't install it without making sure you're running all the latest drivers before you update, but that's just me.

The latest Nvidia drivers add DV HDR, so give those a try. Nvidia will probably put out one more driver update before the Creators Update hits, so I don't expect much at this point.

On what software did you try HDR ?
The only way my HDR TV detects HDR is when I play a games.

I did the update last night, still no Netflix 4k via GPU but this is not a surprise, we need new Nvidia drivers.

On the creators update, I like that they ask me to turn on/off privacy setting while installing.
Also for the first time, my Antivirus is still active.

Not that I know of. At least, there's nothing in the last three releases that references HDR that I've seen. The latest Win 10 drivers are from the 14th of this month, so at least one more driver release should happen on Intel's regular release cadence, before the CU goes wide.

I found how to force HDR:

First make sure your HDR tv is in 10bit. (nvidia control panel)
You need to download / activate this and then start an HDR file in exclusive mode (madvr)

https://developer.nvidia.com/hdr-display-sample
et voila!!

This is the first time my sammy shows an HDR video is playing from my pc!! Thank you!!

As you said, I had to set 10 bit in nvidia control panel but that will only work with ycbcr 4:2:2 or 4:2:0. I can't get rgb 10 bit full color range (rather than dynamic). Do you start madvr while the hdr demo is playing?

Yeah this worked before creator - but creator should be automatic . It sucks with a z9 since enabling hdr is freaking blinding in desktop mode !!

The update goes live tomorrow for early adopters and those who want to get it manually, through the Windows Update Assistant utility.

I upgraded a few days ago and it was painless. Wasn't looking for any of the new features so it was mostly transparent. They did move around/remove a few things like the Control Panel and Software Install/Uninstall. It's on a dual boot PC and I don't use Windows on it to any degree... hence everything still "looks" the same. What apps/drivers I have carried over fine.

I installed the update this morning. Completely painless and easy. However, the update is one of those "Let's rearrange things to make it better, mmmkay?" updates and you are left with no information on what has been moved where, so if you click on things in the Control Panel/Settings and expect something to be there and it's been moved, you need to use the search function to find it. The only negative side-effect thus far is that the update appears to have deleted my Offline Map downloads or did not copy them to whatever new place they are supposed to be now, so I'm having to download it all over again, which is 25.6GB. Yay.

No I just tried, still no native HDR support without the nvidia script but I think MADVR need to be updated for this.
Netflix 4K via GPU doesnt work too, only 1080p.

At least now the driver report version 2.2 of WDDM.

It has Dolby Vision for games, so there is HDR there. The update is more about laying the foundation, as programs obviously have to be updated to use HDR formats with the rendering framework in Windows 10. It's not a simple flip-switch thing to use at this point. Once we have HDR PC monitors later in the year, you'll get HDR enabled software, as there will obviously be a need for it and devs will have access to monitors to do the work. Some existing high-end monitors may also be given HDR firmware to enable it, just as older UHDTVs have.

Let us know if it sticks after turning the PC off and on several times and having the receiver or projector turned off and then turned on in any order. It's possible that the HDMI EDID chain could be key in keeping it enabled and if it is, that could be problematic for receiver users given how those tend to muck things up.

I have two systems:
One with a gtx 1070 to a 4k receiver to a 4k projector.
And one with a gtx960 to a cheap hdr uhdtv.

Both setup works without issues, no HDMI EDID problems.
That's really awesome, now we just need AACS 2.0 to be cracked so we can have UHD-BD playback using MADVR.

I've updated my windows 10 to the creator update last night and I also updated my Nvidia drivers to 381.65. (both update went well)
I got a similar setup, gtx 1070 to a 4k receiver(anthem) to a 4k projector(JVC).

When I flip the HDR on in the new windows setting, my projector detect some HDR metadata and switch to HDR mode but I get a very washed out picture. Something is wrong and I can't find it yet. also in my Nvidia settings color mode reset to default, if I switch back to Nvidia settings and set YUV 4:2:0, 10 or 12bit, it still stay washed out, but after a fullscreen swtich I end up with HDR disabled in windows setting and it is back to what is was prior the the creator update. It seem like switching the color setting in the Nvidia panel simply disable the HDR mode native to windows and I loose HDR metadata(I can understand it, but since there is not an HDR switch in the Nvidia panel yet this is strange...)

prior to the update I've been using HDR with Madvr for a few month and It was working great(without the metadata so manual switching)
I've dig up a few post in differents forum for the last 48h and it seem I am not the only one with this washed out HDR state.

I am glad to know it work for you, there is hope then. One quick question, did you update your Nvidia drivers to 381.65 ?

After updating both, my TV stays in HDR mode 24/7 now. It looks normal enough to me I guess. Although if this washed out effect is a slight thing, I probably wouldn't notice it.

I have a question about the TV being in HDR mode 24/7 but 99% of the content I'm viewing on my PC is not HDR content. How will that work? I've tried watching a bit of the many movies I have on my HTPC and there hasn't been any obvious issues with watching a non-HDR movie in HDR mode, but I still wonder. Thanks.

EDIT: After more testing I think I see what you mean. I think the washed out color issue you're referring to may be from viewing non-HDR content in the TVs HDR mode? I don't know but I do know that Mass Effect Andromeda is now broken.

In windows native HDR mode, when I launch MEA, I get all kinds of flickering where the screen will just show a complete green image or a full red image. Then when it finally does get into the game, the menu is super laggy like even unplayable. When I finally got into the actual game it was better but still just off. I even tried to disable native HDR and just use HDR like I had been but I could no longer get HDR to work like that at all. I don't know what's up man but I'm def frustrated.

Sony 65" X850D, Onkyo TX-NR757, Klipsch 7.2, R-28F/2, R-25C/1, R-15M/4, R-12SW/2

HTPC: Corsair 800D case, Intel i7 7700k 4.5GHz (stock clock) Kaby Lake CPU, Corsair H100i CPU water cooler, ASUS ROG Maximus Hero IX mobo, Corsair Vengeance DDR4 16GB RAM @3000MHz, SLI EVGA 980Ti SC, Corsair AX1200i PSU, Corsair 360GB SSD Win 10, multiple large HDDs

Yeah I get all kinds of issues with trying to play games in windows native HDR mode. The one HDR game I have, Mass Effect Andromeda, doesn't play well anymore, and my non-HDR games have oversaturated weird color. So if I take it back to my old color settings (Chroma 444 8 bit), which I've done, I can no longer get MEA to switch into HDR mode when launching the game.
