I just setup PowerDVD VR-X and it seems VERY unstable. I definately didn't get all these crashes with the regular 3.0 PowerDVD and WinDVD. It seems enabling Hardware Acceleration makes it worse. When it crashes it locks the whole system up, and I have to reset. Here's my system info.

WinME
P3-750 AOpen AX6B w/256MB
Elsa Gladaic GTS 32MB
12.00 Nvidia drivers.
800x600 desktop res.

I have a feeling it's these latest NVidia reference drivers. I would try a different set of drivers, but these have been running so well for me that I'm reluctant to switch.

For the periods that I'm able to play PowerDVD VR-X before it crashes it does seem to include some really nice improvements. For one the under-sampling problem(playing Anamorphic DVDs at 800x600) seems to be fixed. I can play Anamorphic DVDs at 800x600 without hardware acceleration and I don't see missing line anomolies. Actually turning off hardware acceleration looks much nicer than having hardware acceleration on with the latest PowerDVD.

As far as sound goes, I still don't notice any difference between WinDVD and PowerDVD when going through SPDIF to my Denon AVR-3300.

I think I'll stick with WinDVD 2.6.4 for the time being. Maybe I'll try it again when an official English VR-X patch comes out.

You are not alone. I too am running WinME and upgraded to PowerDVD VR-X last night. The picture improvement is significant, but so are the lock ups. The only time I remember mine locking up (3 times)was when I paused the DVD, went upstairs for a few minutes or so and came down to start up the movie again. I have not had time to play with it very much, so I can't report much, but PowerDVD 3 never exibited this behavior.

I will try and post more tonight including accurate HW list when I have some time to play....

I've installed PDVD VRX on Win98se(US-English) and for the most part, it is working fine. The problems that bug me the most are:

Subtitle Menu, Audio Menu, Screen Display. I'm not sure if I'm missing a font or if these are not using the English settings, but all I get is an underline for the names of the language in these settings. Is an English display available?

A little OT:
Trying to use a Pronto to control the DVD drive is difficult. I'm not sure on how to send a command to just make the powerDVD window the active window. If I start with powerDVD window as the active window, the keyboard shortcuts work. (I'm still searching for the reverse shortcut.) What I would like is something that works like the Airboard programable keys. These can be set to control some functions of the DVD drive without powerDVD being the active window. For now I've programmed these into the Pronto (lots of trial and error to get the right signal duration.)
Has anyone found a better solution using a Pronto w/Airboard receiver?

Rich.. The application you seek (recieving IR commands either with IR keyboard input or IRMan, UIR, etc) is called Girder...

Yes, I get the same thing. I assume it is because those are still in Japanese. I've looked in the registry but I couldn't find it in there so it must be elsewhere. I too would like to get that fixed...

Did you guys backup the appropriate files like bbq suggested in this thread http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/009513.html and then put them back when you were done with the VR-X install?

Also make sure you have the PowerDVD registry entries set to "Enu" instead of "Jpn".

I've noticed that VRX is more 'WinDVD-like' in its stability. I would have expected as much given the BBQ(tm) installshield. Why don't you give Cyberlink support a buzz? :-)

It's not too bad on my systems - I just leave the PC alone from movie start to finish and don't mess too much with the system while a DVD is going.

"I've noticed that VRX is more 'WinDVD-like' in its stability."

Maybe we need to wait for PowerDVD 3.1:
http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/index.asp

BTW, PowerDVD Linux is coming soon.

Q: Is there any trial version available for individual users?
A: Trial version is not yet available for end users right now. Please check back CyberLink web site constantly and we'll publish related news once it is available.
Q: Do you have PowerDVD Linux retail version for we Linuxers?
A: Not yet. Due to the variety of different audio and video hardware devices among systems , there are still many details we have to work out. For example, some device manufacturers such have not released their display drivers with Macrovision support for Linux yet. That is why CyberLink can not release the retail version right now. We think it is not responsible to release any product until we can ensure the functionality, general compatibility and program stability when running our software. CyberLink is also looking forward to integrating PowerDVD Linux into various Linux distributions.

I think the VR-X version is a fake.
I just tested it and it seems to contain faults which were
there in much earlier versions and:
- The easter egg version info in the about popup is empty.
- The VR-X text looks like a bad photoshop job.
- The picture quality is bad.
- There is stutter like in the earlier versions.
- ...

I've been having a weird problem with VR-X (and possibly 3.0 also) with the fast forward (f) feature. On many occasions, the player just locks into fast forward. Usually at x3.0 but sometimes at x2.0. After about 15 to 30 seconds, the system would finally start to respond to keyboard inputs.
Well I found that another program running in the background was causing the problem. I have an Arescom APEX 1000 ISDN Router and I use the Arescom Connection Tool to signal the router connect to the internet. For some reason this application is in the fast forward path.
The last time my player locked into fast forward mode, I did a Ctrl-Alt-Del and up popped "Arescom Connection Tool - This program is not responding". I shut it down and I no longer have any problems with fast forward. (I repeated the test a few times to be sure about the scenario.)
Anyone able to think of a reason this should be happening?

After the VRX-X upgrade, what is listed for the 'ProductVersion' under 'Other version information' on the PowerDVD.exe properties sheet?

You might be surprised after 'upgrading' from 3.0....
