Just a question folks...

I have the opportunity of picking up a Creative Labs 6X DVD drive for about 50 bux. I've been hearing via the forum, that faster in DVD drives is not necessarily better, especially when it comes to Noise levels.

Who actually manufactures this drive? And what are some opinions on this puppy? Reliable? Fast enough?

Oh.. I also understand that switching the DMBA setting on a DVD drive is important. Can you do it with this drive?

I've had the Creative 6x DVD drive for about a year now with no problems.
Yes, you can enable DMA with this drive.

Wayne,

do you use the DX3 card? Or not? This deal does not include the card... Is it necessary? I was just gonna plug it into the IDE slot.

I don't use the DX3 card, it's sitting in a box somewhere. Hardware decoding is not needed. My HDTV is my monitor and the Radeon VIVO does the decoding.

Hi Klutzo:

___Not to screw up a deal but the Toshiba 4.8X SD-M1202, the Sony 4.8x, and the Pioneer 6X 103S are great drives although all have been discontinued as well. The problem with the Creative drives is that they could be made by anyone at any given time. Creative does not build the drives but spec’s them from various manufacturers. As for cost, CD/DVD-ROM drives are back down to levels we have not seen in a year and a half and that is on the latest CD/DVD-ROM drives made today. I picked up 2 Toshiba SD-M1502’s 16X/48X’s for just $59.00 last week and they are now down to just $57.00 + shipping today.

___You will more than likely not be using that Creative (Hollywood + decoder card) any more. The SW DVD players have much more capability and quality of output as long as you have a 400 MHz or faster CPU and optimized SW.

___Good Luck

Well Xcel.. the main reason I'm innerested in the creative DVD is because of sound levels. Mind you.. all I heard was the system fan, but the spin up and down were virtually silent.

I WAS wondering about the OEM manufacturere that did these drives, for I may have a mitsumi... or some other crap band name....

Maybe I'll take a chance...

Oh and Karis... thanks for the info too! (Perhaps you can peak at your drive to see the manufacturer?)

75 canadian, no tax... that would be 50 US, no tax.. maybe I can talk the guy down to 60 CDN... that would make it a deal.
