My reason for not going with a HTPC is that I want it to be seamless for my wife to use. But I thought I would ask the following question. If yes is the answer, then maybe this is the way to go:
Is it possible to have the HTPC auto detect the incoming signal do different things with it. Note I am not focusing on the video switching issue at the moment, and am assuming a stand-alone DVD player:
for 480i 4x3 SD Dish programming, convert to 480p 4:3
for 480p 4x3 DVD input, do nothing
for 480p 16:9 DVD, convert to 540p or 1080i (to make it work on my 1080i input on TV which has anamorphic squeeze on it for widescreen optimization)
for 1080i 16:9 HD Dish programming, do nothing
If I can get it to do this automatically, then I can get a component video switcher, run one component video signal to the PC and then one from the PC to the TV. Then my TV would work optimally.
If it would be easier to do this using the built-in DVD player in the computer, then let me know that too.
