The drive arrived a few days ago. Just popped it into my HTPC. Installed the software. Popped in Batman Returns. Seems to run just fine. I have to select SPDIF as the speaker option in order to get sound out of all of my speakers. I do not use a receiver, I output analog via Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite. So I can not say for sure what type of audio I am getting. All I know is with SPDIF I get sound out of all 7.2 speakers. If I check 7 or 8 speakers I only seem to get two channel. No matter what I select the scroll window always says 2CH. Is there any reason to upgrade to power dvd ultra? This seems to work fine but like I said I do not have a reciever to tell me what I getting. I may only be getting pro-logic for all I know. Any advise is appreciated.

I need to buy a blu-ray to test that next.

So far I can say, any one sitting on the fence should go ahead and buy this drive. I'm not a computer geek and I got it to work with no problems.

No, I think its the other way around - I got the N version and it has lightscribe. So maybe the L version is without.

I got my drive today and everything seems to be working well with HD DVD. I don't have any Blu-ray discs yet, so I couldn't test that part. King Kong playback is very smooth. I have an Asus P5B-Plus mobo, Asus passively cooled 8600GT video card and an Intel E4300 OCed to 3 GHZ. I get hardware acceleration with VC1 and the latest nVidia drivers.

I did want to pass along that I was able to use an eSATA to USB2 adapter, and I was able to get the drive to play just as cleanly as with a straight SATA connection. This was important to me because I was afraid I was going to have to bring my computer upstairs from the basement, where it remains cool and noise-free. This means I can use an external 5 1/4" enclosure in my main home theater gear rack, pop in discs as needed and control everything from my chair. The computer can remain quietly out of sight.

Got mine yesterday, one week after the order was placed. Not bad from Canada. I am very pleased with ncixus.com and would order from them again.

Drive works flawlessly. I have installed the PowerDVD software and it downloaded a 68MB update from cyberlink. I have surround sound through the spdif option.

I played KingKong HDDVD and a National Geographic Blu-ray without difficulty.

What is the advantage and cost of upgrading to the full retail version of PowerDVD?

Rapha,

According to my owner's manual, L is for lightscribe and N is without.

Only difference I know of is that for analog audio output, the retail version supports up to 8 speakers, whereas the OEM version only supports 2.

One other this is that I can not get Evan Almighty to play on PDVD it will play on my trial HD/Blu player from Arcsoft but it locks up within seconds on PDVD.

I had the same issue when I was trying to update my non-oem install of PDVD. It never did let me play a movie after an hour of removing/reinstalling the full version, so I installed the OEM version of it. Kinda pissed me off since I already spent $100 on the software and the free OEM version worked better!

I haven't noticed the 2ch problem though either. I set it to 6 channel output using my DD Live card. Seemed to work fine...

Has anyone confirmed what the differences are between the OEM and retail versions of PDVD? I dont see anywhere where I can input my retail license key either.

I didn't install the OEM version of PowerDVD at all. I already had PDVD Ultra installed. I just plugged in the drive. I updated to the latest PDVD patch and upgraded the nVidia drivers (Asus 8600 GT). The system played King Kong smooth as buttah. Today I test Blu-ray.

I didnt try to play an HD DVD after the update. A Blu Ray movie is what caused the issue. let us know if the Blu Ray movies work for you.

I was about to post a link for you for the L version... and now, even though it's in my cart at NCIX, they're claiming no such product!

That's very weird, my receipt says H20N, I just checked the box and its an H20L and says Lightscribe on the box (I knew I'd seen it) - so you are correct.

On another subject, I have today done some more testing and am definitely getting 5.1 sound from Power DVD through the SPDIF option, so it's not hamstrung to 2 channel output as some have reported. One strange thing though - it keeps defaulting to 2 channel, I need to find out why it's not sticking with SPDIF.

For those in Canada, I just talked to PCCanada.com and they said they have a shipment coming next week. Unfortunately they do not sell outside of Canada, so us Americans are screwed again.

You can reserve 1 now on their website.

I must have lucked out yesterday. I walked into Bestbyte Computers in Whitby, ON and they had one of these in stock. The first HD DVD I tried "King Kong" will not play past the intro unless I configure the audio as analog (2 channels). Otherwise, PowerDVD stops responding. The problem is then reported to Microsoft followed by a black screen and ultimately a reboot. I have tried Superman Returns and World Trade Center (both HD DVD with S/PDIF output) without problems. Tomorrow I will pickup Spiderman 3 on Blu-ray and take that for a test drive. I am disappointed that I need to buy the retail version of PowerDVD Ultra to receive updates. I would hate to spend $100 and not solve my problem.

For those of you who have already installed the drive I have a question. How are you passing the audio signal to your processor? Are you having to use the auido card outpurts to analog inputs in your A/V processor? Would SPDIF work in this scenario?

My drive arrived last Friday but I was out of town so I installed it this am, tested with 4 BluRay titles and then ripped the 4 Blu-ray discs and tried it tonight ( I had previously ripped 20+ HD DVD using XBOX 360 drive and they worked fine with PDVD 3104.a.1). I also tested with "Transformers" HD DVD earlier today and for the few minuties I tried it, the drive worked perfectly. So far, I am delighted with the LG drive. Tonight "Layer Cake" (from ripped file) worked perfectly. I can't tell any quality difference between BD and HD but it is good to be able to play either to get a broader choice of titles. So, I am a happy camper. I have pretty capable HTPC with AMD 62FX CPU (dual core 2.8 MHz), 4GB RAM, which runs at about 15-20% CPU and about 1.2 G RAM utilization for HD and BD movies; so the HTPC pretty much loafs with no hiccups in audio or video.

I shot an email to my local mom and pop computer parts store. They are able to order the drive from their supplier. You may want to check in your area. Mine will cost $302 with no shipping. A little more but I have a local purchase in case I need to return it.

Thank you! Hopefully the rest of my HTPC components come in this week.

I really wonder if Best Buy or Circuit City will be offering free blu-ray/hd-dvd movies with the purchase of the drive when they stock it...

I believe buffalo sells an external USB enclosure using the LG drive, it's available in Japan but not here yet.
