I have a 5040 Lifetime activated unit that lost its ability to record anything (#1). Something in the input converters apparently - it won't record from RF, composite, or S-video.
Recently I received another lifetime activated 5040 from a family member (#2). It's hard drive was dead. I took the hard drive out of mine and put it in the the #2 unit.
The #2 unit boots up fine, but goes to the Service Activation screen when I try to do anything. I am able get to setup, and Ethernet is correctly connected with a valid IP address. Under System Information /Unit Info it says "Service: Activated (one-time fee paid)
What options are available to return this unit to operation again?
By the way, I don't use it to do any off the air or off cable recording, so program guides, etc are irrelevant. I just want it for manual recording of directly connected NTSC video sources to digitize and download the MPEG2 video that I can edit.
