Hi,

I've done some research on using a replaytv 5040 with a Directv D-12 and it looks like I'll be ok using an ir blaster as long as I update the IR codes on my replays.

Can anyone confirm if the serial control will also work without using a Paterson USB Translator?

I've been happily using RCA DRD420RE's with serial control for years, but now Directv is forcing an upgrade on me. I hated using the IR blaster in the past as the replay's seemed to sometimes send extra digits or send too slowly on occasion and mess up the channel change, and thus the recordings.

If anybody else is using this setup I'd appreciate any tips you might have - Directv is coming out on Sunday.

Regards,

Todd

I can confirm that my ReplayTV 5040 works fine with the DirecTV D-12-100.

Here are the details:

A Serial to USB Converter (AirLink 101 - Mod: AC-USBS) is connected to the DirecTV D-12 and due to the gender conflict, there is a Female to Female 9-Pin Serial Cable connecting the Converter to the ReplayTV.

The ReplayTV is connected via the S-Video port to the DirecTV box and is controlled using Serial Port (APG) setting.

No Patterson Converter is needed. smile.gif

Is the Female/Female adapter a null modem adapter too? I suspect both the ReplayTV and USB adapter are DTE devices.

Maybe post the model # of the F/F adapter.

(doesn't matter to me, but I'm asking for clarification for the archives)

would be curious whether others have problems with the IR blaster.. occasionally, my 5080 & DirectTV D12 will attempt to record a program, but what is recorded is either the 'previous' station, or some seemingly random set of digits. 95% of the time, it is fine..

The serial cable that I used was just a plain serial cable but with two female ends (NOT a null modem cable).

Here are the details: Belkin Pro Series 13660

if it records a previous station or randum it means the new station is not in ur lineup or the dtv box did not receive the blAster signal correctly. try to realine the blaster right over the ir receiver or turn it upside down and tape it there for better signal. the ir receiver on the dtv box is just to the right of the blue power light--d

Hal, thank you for the cable recommendation.  Can you please confirm that the cable you linked is the one that you use?  You mentioned that you're not using a cable with null modem wiring, but the specifications of this cable indicate null modem wiring.  Just double checking before I pull the trigger.
