In need of 5xxx unit

If anyone has a 5xxx unit (preferably 5504, 5040, etc) and is interested in parting with it, please drop me a PM. I'd be interested in acquiring it.

Here is a refined eBay search that will just bring up Replay units.

Looks that way, doesn't it. he's got 5 units up there, with drive sizes ranging from 40gb to 305gb. His prices start at $66.20 up to $108.10 (with shipping) and the auctions all have about 1 day left. He's in Richmond Hill, Georgia.

From the listing:

"I've been using this unit with WiRNS for channel guide and management functions, with automatic Internet-based TV guide updates from ScheduleDirect."

Yep, one of us for sure.

Are you still looking for a reasonably priced unit? I have a 5040 with the original box and accessories that is hardly used.
If you've found something, please let the Thread know.

Sorry, I should have updated. I did connect with someone and I have a 5504 now. I'm sure someone may be in need however. Thanks for letting me know.

Did you load the patched version of the 144 build into it, which basically converts it into a 5040?

Not yet. I have a few spare drives that are larger than the 40gb in this unit, so as soon as I get some time I'm going to image one with that version and upgrade the drive.

Any other software differences to expect? It's my first 5504 and I've always heard about the patched version, but this will be the first time I'm trying it.

the 5504 and 5040 units are identical other than their serial numbers. The standard 144 firmware tests the serial numbers and can tell if the unit is a 55xx rather than a 5xxx unit and then it disables CA and IVS.

So, if your other units are all 5xxx, you should be used to having the option to "Send Show" and "Skip Commercials" when you select a recording. Those options will be missing from the 5504 until you load the patched firmware.

Two ReplayTV 4504s For Sale

This thread reminded me that I have two ReplayTV 4504s that have been sitting in my closet since I got DirecTV five years ago (with two DVR receivers that took over their role). IIRC, these each have 40GB drives and were the last models that could automatically skip commercials, before lawsuits forced ReplayTV to abandon that capability.

Both worked fine when I pulled them out of service, and have lifetime activation (for whatever that's worth now); I miss their auto-skip capability, which was pretty good. Each comes with its own (Sonic Blue) remote, but no manual; I assume the latter are still available for download.

Anybody interested in these DVRs? If so, PM me an offer.

Ken

Ken, if you see this could you PM me or otherwise reply with an alternative way to contact you? I joined the forum in order to respond to your offer, but can't PM without a post count of 15 and I'm a newbie with nothing to say, so can't get anywhere

Thank you - Grace & Peace!

It would be better for the recipient to go to UPS and choose the options to estimate. The box would be coming from Round Rock, Texas 78665.
Another thing is that I have three other units for which I need to work up the specs (HD size, working condition [almost all working fine], etc) and am offering those also at no cost except for shipping.
If you want to wait to see what else is available under these conditions, let me know and I'll send you what info I have either on the AVS Forum List or privately. I was sort of thinking to put these units on the list in the hopes that someone here in central Texas might come by and pick them up, eliminating shipping hassles and charges. Time Warner has gone to all digital here and it was easier for me to convert to a TiVo. But I digress.....
Let me know what you think. I get to work on writing up the specs of the other units. Thanks.
Joel
Thanks Joel, Ill wait and see what you come up with.
Tivo Bolt? let me know how the commercial skip works for ya. Im told TW wont let TIVO units digitally advance any sports or prime time programming.
Sheesh... imagine if the music industry did that with music CD,s and you couldn't skip chapters as 'you' see fit without their permission...nevermind, now I digress

Hey Randy, if you're in CA, you might want to ask Karl to introduce you to his friend on Facebook who's giving away a couple of RTV units, as she's in Los Angeles, so the shipping shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks for the information about your replay giveaways.
I still haven't made up my mind to get some extra units.

Seems there is an attempt by some manufactures to provide DVR's with features similar to Replay Ben's. (ie Chanel Master, TIVO bolt).

Maybe, someday there will be a (black market?) 'digital' replaytv clone that isn't controlled by the content providers! after all their basically just bit shippers, you know...

Dead 5xxx

I have an old 5xxx (5040?) collecting dust. Flakey PSU(?dead), no HDD(?unsure), no remote. I swapped the PSU to repair my original 5040. The remaining hardware (board, box/case, front-panel connectors) is all good. Free to any interested party. I'm in the SF Bay Area.

I finally got around to taking photos and listing myReplayTV Model 5040 with the commercial skip on ebay. Try this link to see it and look at the photos. The nice thing about ebay is that it will calculate the shipping from me to you which was the most frequently asked question when I mentioned it previously on this thread. I've asked a nominal amount which is very small considering that power supplies and other components alone are offered at higher prices.
