If Replay is getting out of the ad selling business (according to the press release) then I won't see any ads on my ReplayTV branded box, right?

eg. Panasonic will sell ads for the Showstopper, AT&T will sell ads for their box, etc. So, no Replay selling ads, then no ads on the Replay box.

If this is so then maybe Replay, in the next release, will program the software to not display the pause pop-up screen and just keep the paused screen.

Comments?

I was thinking this very same thing. However, I think they'll probably leave that functionality in the software so that others will be able to sell the ad space. We will probably continue to see the Zone ads is my guess...

I wouldn't be suprised if ReplayTV turned over support and control of
there existing customers to one of their partners such as Panasonic.

If this happens, expect the next software downloaded to your
ReplayTV-branded box to make it behave like the Showstopper does
(i.e. Macrovision, etc.).

Why would they bother to do that? That seems like more trouble than it is worth.

Why would they do what?

Hand over their customers to Panasonic?

Because ReplayTV is out of the business of selling advertising. If they
don't sell their customers to one of their partners, they will have to
give free (non-advertiser supported) service to the legacy ReplayTV-branded
owners. It makes sense to sell these customers to Panasonic or some other
partner. This way ReplayTV makes some more money from Panasonic, and
Panasonic makes more money from us.

Why would Panasonic then make the legacy ReplayTV-branded boxes behave
in the same way the existing Panasonic Showstopper boxes do?

I think this answer is obvious... Because they can. The ReplayTV and
Showstopper boxes are exactly the same hardware-wise. It woould only
take flipping a few bits in the software to get them to behave just like
a Showstopper (I believe). Panasonics' policy is to block viewing of
all Macrovision protected programming with their digital recorders. They
want to avoid lawsuits. I bet they would not agree to buy ReplayTVs
customers unless they could do this. Unless, of coures, Panasonic
does the wise thing and rethinks their Macrovision policy.

Replay-branded units 2020 and before (that's all there were were Replay-branded back then) are different hardware and can't be made to record the MV signal, right?

(ie: I'm safe, right? since I own a 2020 http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif
