How long is forever? Make sure the DVD authoring program isn't reencoding the mpeg and that could be part of the problem. I just sit and watch a recorded program or browse the Internet while DVDs are created and burned.

Yes! Success! Thanks for pointing me to the right place dvasco. SubtitleCreator did it for me. I was right in my speculation that the subtitles were displaying off the screen on my dvd player.

When I used SubtitleCreator to convert the .srt files to .sup, it didn't make a difference, but I noticed SubtitleCreator allows you to move the placement of the subtitles on your screen. When I moved the subtitles further up and resaved the .srt file, then played the mpeg w/ new .srt file on my dvd player, they started displaying right where I placed it!

This is just one program. I'm going to try more later tonight when I'm done w/ work.

For posterity, I'll post my my complete technique.

Yeah, my DVD program re-encodes my videos because I record in standard. It's just faster to make a data dvd with my mpeg files copied to the disk.

Now that I've got it working, no need to make an authored DVD. :)

I don't think Ulead DVD MF2 reencodes as long as the width or height, I can't remember which, is 480. Standard is 480x480 so that wouldn't be a problem. Doesn't matter anyway since you have your problem figured out.

Eric of comskip helped out with the commands for a batch file that runs rtvcc & comskip.

%~dpn1 will be replace by the disk, path and filename without extension of the first parameter.

call it as

doit original.mpg
or
doit "c:\\path with spaces\\original filename.mpg"
joesc1, you should be able to edit that to your method as

rtvcc "%~dpn1.mpg"
del "%~dpn1.mpg"
mpg2srt "%~dpn1_cc.mpg"

I still need to find the command for QSF in VideoRedo for you.

Thanks, I'll definitely be using that batch file!

No need to find the command for QSF though, as using QSF in VideoRedo doesn't seem to be needed for my files. I'm able to get the captions to display as subtitles just fine by using rtvcc and then mpg2srt. The last step is to run SubtitleCreator to adjust the positioning of the subtitles.

Although I'm trying to figure out how it works, because looking at the .srt files in notepad, I don't really see much difference. Definitely don't see anything that indicates screen position. If I did, maybe I could edit it myself in a batch file to set the position.

But, I'm not complaining, :) it takes a couple of seconds to open the SRT file in SubtitleCreator and reposition the text box and resave as an SRT.
