I am hoping this is the most appropriate of the forums to post this request. There obviously isn't much discussion of betamax on AVSforum.

Does anyone know- or can guess- of anywhere in the NYC metro area where I could rent a betamax player for a few days? It doesn't even need to record, just play.

I have some old beta tapes that I believe has some family moments, that if I'm right, we would like to keep.

I need to find those moments myself and edit just what I want to keep so I don't want to just give all the beta tapes to be transfered to DVD - if that is still even done these days.

If there is a more appropriate forum, could you point me to it?

Hi Opinionated,
There are a few Betamax players available for sale on eBay - why don't you just buy one? I reckon no one wants to just "rent out" their Betamax as much as wanting to get rid of them. Heck, if I had one, I'd want to sell it too.

Anyway, the ones on eBay cost as low as $24. That's very little compared to what you would spend having all your Betamax tapes converted to DVD.

Good luck with saving all those memories!

eBay was the first place I looked. The only ones for sale that are not listed "as is", with no guarantee that they even work, get bid up to levels well beyond $24.

I was not thinking of an individual renting me their machine- although if someone had one they were not using, getting some income for a few days of my borrowing it would not seem to me to be a bad idea. I was asking if there was some shop that does such rentals within driving distance of NYC .

I found a place on line, but with a required $350 deposit, shipping both ways and the mishaps that can occur, etc, and other issues, I am somewhat leery.

Misterbetamax/Mrbetamax hit pretty high in my google search too - $350 deposit.

The site seems very good, and it seems he's been in business a while.

It doesn't look at all like a scam.

Maybe if you google misterbetamax or mrbetamax and the word 'forum' you could find some references.

You don't have many options. Most of the betamax machines, I think, are in the hands of professional tape editing companies (prob hundreds in NYC). They'd love to convert your movies, but I think you'll save money doing it yourself, and you'll probably do a better job.

Look for film transfer shops. Those guys who take VHS to DVD. They tend to have every format under the sun, though they probably won't rent out the players since you'd be doing the service that they perform...

There are many that sold on EBay in the $50 to $60 range that stated they were working and were from sellers with good feedback. I doubt that you will find anyone renting them for that price.

it's the matter of how much you value your family videos.

I'd spend $350 to obtain my family videos because the memories are priceless.
