I prefer the softer image on the right. I can see that the left image has more sharpness to it, but in this example, it feels more digitally compressed to me. And I think that at normal viewing distance on typical size flat panels, the softer image may look better.

The two were pretty close. I chose the left because there is more detail. The white balance and black levels look pretty as does the color and tint. To me if you lose detail, you're losing some of them visual data. The detail doesn't appear to be because of increased sharpness because I don't see edge "ringing". Not sure what the difference is, but if I want to see a soft picture I'll watch SD.

Both look very similar but liked the detail on the left.

By the way, there are some interesting observations above. I appreciate that.

The left is a bit noisier but the right is overly smooth.

The one on the left is from a Philips 3400 DVD recorder. The one on the right, is the component output from the same DVD recorder, connected to an HD Capture Unit (AverMedia USB). The source is a Mitsubishi Super VHS player.

I guess there is a compromise between detail and color. The DVD recorder seems to have more detail (but yes, I can see it as being noisier), and the HD Capture Unit has brighter, bolder colors and is softer looking.
