I can see a spin off, straight to video release where a young Luke Skywalker is magically transported to Never- Never Land. Once there, he finds out Capt. Hook is his REAL father.

While Lucas and Disney have had a long relationship, it has been most visible at the company's theme parks, where Star Tours and other attractions have been popular for more than two decades.

However, the Stars Wars movies have been distributed through Twentieth Century Fox, which will now be cut out of future Star Wars and other related business. (Though Fox already has been set to release 3-D versions of the past Star Wars movies, it is unclear if that relationship will be impacted by the sale. The acquisition also raises questions about the future of Stars Wars: Clone Wars, a highly popular series on the Cartoon Network, which is owned by Disney’s competitor, Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner.)

It might be time to end Clone Wars. Wrap it up this season.

I have to say my jaw dropped when I saw this news especially considering they have a plan to do a new movie so soon.

I just hope that Disney gets the right creative forces behind it. I just have a fear that they are going to go too kid friendly.

Hopefully that negotiation goes like this one.

Perhaps it would cause George to be more sympathetic towards the fans after the merry-go-round they have experienced in regards to the Original Trilogy.

The Real Force Behind 'Star Wars': How George Lucas Built an Empire

The $20 billion in merchandise sold through the film series reveals the resonance of a simple good-versus-evil story -- and the mastermind brushstrokes of the filmmaker.

funny on how everyone is acting silly about this, while the chances of getting an original unaltered trilogy bluray set just shot up significantly, one has to wonder about all the writers & actors involved with cartoon networks clone wars jobs

Disney hopes to essentially relaunch the Star Wars film franchise, which had its last installment in 2005 with Revenge of the Sith. Following the three planned sequels, the company envisions releasing even more Star Wars movies at a rate of a new film every two to three years.

Future movies may not be sequels but movies that focus on fringe characters. Disney also believes there is potential for a television series.

Quote:
In valuing Lucasfilm, Disney focused almost entirely on the Star Wars franchise, company executives said.

"We didn't attribute any value to the Indiana Jones franchise because of the encumbrances that exist," Iger said, referring to Paramount Pictures' ongoing stake in the series it has distributed.

News Corp. (NWS) unit 20th Century Fox has been Star Wars' distributor until now. It retains some rights to past films but has no stake in Disney's planned future installments, company executives said.

George Lucas has always been an extremely shrewd businessman and I see this as just another very smart - if calculated - business decision. It provides a pathway for Star Wars to continue for many more years (who better than a multimedia juggernaut like Disney to shepherd them into the future) while also giving Lucas a nice financial windfall. He also finally gets the crazy "George Lucas raped my childhood" fanboys off his back; deserved or not, he's caught more than his fair share of grief from the lunatic fringe of fandom over the years and this may be his way of finally getting one last laugh at their expense, essentially telling them that since he couldn't please them, let someone else take a shot.

I don't see what the fuse is about? I think Lucas messed up the prequels and I think new ideas and with the technology behind Disney will only make the next installments better. As long as Micheal Bay is not involved. And I definitely think some of the old school Pixar guys who used to work for Lucas should get in on the act as well.

Please don't take any offense by what I am about to say, but I love that you state he messed up the prequels but your avatar is Darth Maul.

I agree with you that the prequels were messed up. Great visuals in parts, but written and directed for 5 year olds.

Here is a fun thought though. Disney has Marvel, which just did The Avengers with Joss Whedon. Imagine a Joss Whedon written/directed series of Star Wars films with $200 million budgets. That could be fun.

Or Chris Nolan, now that he has completed the Batman trilogy.

Hmm, I see some potential here.

The original releases were great for their time. I don't see any problem with the star wars films. As long as they are not given to the wrong directors like michael bay or that guy who did the resident evil films lol. Disney acquired Marvel, and a lot of people liked The Avengers, including myself, and I didn't think I would. So what is wrong with having some hope? There are lots of stories to tell in that universe. Even though the online Star Wars game didn't do so great, the cutscenes were awesome. Some of the best star wars action ever. So yes, I am excited about this news and look forward to see what comes about.

4 billion? If Lucas hadn't stunk up the place with those prequels he could have gotten 20 billion. Those prequels have to remain the three worst films of all time.
