Walt Disney just announced that it will buy Lucasfilm from George Lucas for $4.05 billion in cash and stock! This includes the Star Wars franchise, Indiana Jones franchise, ILM, LucasArts, and Skywalker sound.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production.

Here's what George Lucas had to say:

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

The announcement also mentions that Star Wars Episode 7 is scheduled for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 are planned as well, every 2-3 years.

Update: George Lucas on the future of Star Wars:

djgill 10-30-2012 01:26 PM

I honestly thought I'd never see the day...

Lethean 10-30-2012 01:34 PM

Oh wow! I'd love to see an Episode 7. Too bad Mark Hammill is past his prime. Wonder what direction they'll take...Or who will direct.
As long as we never get a Michael Bay directed Start Wars I'm happy :P

Frosteh 10-30-2012 01:35 PM

Episode 7? What more could they possibly do to ruin the franchise? I suppose the only thing that could be worse is if Michael Bay directs it and Keanu Reeves is the lead role.

capnsmak 10-30-2012 01:35 PM

This is how the internet sounds right now.

That's not true! That's impossible! smile.gif

Jindrak 10-30-2012 01:38 PM

This is good and terrible. Terrible because they need to leave Star Wars the **** alone. Good, because I hope now Disney can re-release the Blu-Rays of the original trilogy without the many stupid changes that lucas put in there for the remaster.

BornSlippyZ 10-30-2012 01:39 PM

I guess Lucas wasn't bs'ing when he said he might get out of the movie business.

Wow, thought I was sufficiently shocked, but then we get an Episode 7 announcement to finish?!? Brain is scrambling to make sense of this.... Not sure how to react...

Limp Fox 10-30-2012 01:40 PM

So zzz. It's not going to be the same. You think EP 1 was corny wait till Disney remakes these...

devotiondoubt 10-30-2012 01:42 PM

Oh they will re-release it alright. Then not release it for 12 years. Then re-release it again. Then not release it for...biggrin.gif

DDigitalGuy05 10-30-2012 01:45 PM

WOW! :D

I agree that it would be great to have quality blu-ray releases of the ORIGINAL versions of the movies. Unfortunately George Lucas is an example of the director who should not be allowed to revise his own work. There have been a few instances where this has worked out well, but many more instances where the revised vision is worse than the original. What annoys me most about Lucas is that he offers the revision in place of the original, rather than alongside the original.

Epyon415 10-30-2012 01:58 PM

If Disney can get their Marvel team/affiliates involved in episode 7....there is nothing wrong. And GOD please let an original trilogy blu ray happen, t'is our only hope.

wingnut4772 10-30-2012 01:58 PM

Hallelujah!!!! Now maybe some decent, Lucas free, Star Wars movies can be made!!!!

Lee Weber 10-30-2012 02:01 PM

Scottyb09 10-30-2012 02:08 PM

I think this could be good. Disney is a great company with fantastic resources. It's really a matter of how it's done. Time will tell...

crunchyfrogs 10-30-2012 02:09 PM

I am excited. Glad to see anyone take over at this point.

Surprised - no posting about Indiana Jones - that too goes with LucasFilm

Mike Lang 10-30-2012 02:12 PM

That's a lot to pay for just one more princess!

Lee Stewart 10-30-2012 02:15 PM

OBTW . . .

It's also making a seventh movie in the Star Wars series called Episode 7, set for release in 2015, with plans to follow it with Episodes 8 and 9 and then one new movie every two or three years.

From Starwars.com

Lucas briefly discusses the new possibilities in the transition.

Curious indeed, hopefully it produces positive results but anyone who thought the franchise was blue milked and bilked before just you wait. Disney is notorious for exploiting every last morsel of good will out of the customers/fans.

As Lucas passes on the reins of his Empire to new stewards he relinquishes the independence of his company that he vehemently fought for, in a bygone era. I wonder if he appreciates the irony.

Best Regards
KvE
