I was in the market for a small entry level audiophile integrated amplifier to power my newly purchased KEF R300 speakers. With so many brands to choose from, it was very difficult to chose one without sacrificing quality. Who better to ask but Michael Fremer, founder and editor at AnalogPlanet.com. He suggested I look at Rogue Audio’s newest “Sphinx” hybrid integrated amplifier. After I read the unit’s specifications, I felt I had to share this fantastic unit with others.

The Sphinx was showcased at this year’s CES powering a pair of 150lbs Egglestons ($18,000/pair) flawlessly. What makes this particular amplifier so interesting is that its input stage is based on tubes, and its output stage is class-D. The amp puts out 100watts per channel into 8ohms and 200watts per channel in 4ohms. The small integrated amplifier has four inputs including a phono input as well as three ouputs; one of which is a headphone jack. The other two outputs can be used for a future subwoofer; one output is variable and the other is fixed.

The Sphinx can be ordered in two models: one with remote control ($1395) or without remote ($1295). This definitely makes it a worthy contender to look at it if you’re on a budget without having to sacrifice quality.

Quote:
“Rogue’s Mark O’Brien says he hopes the Sphinx will bring his company’s sound to even more people. Besides, he says, it’s not only more challenging to design on a tight budget, it’s also more fun.” http://www.stereophile.com/content/rogue-audio-sphinx

For all those who didn’t know, Rogue Audio is a US based company. They design and manufacture everything from the guts to the sheet-metal. It’s nice to see some manufacturers not having to outsource and for that I support them very much.

For more information or to audition this unit; please visit www.rogueaudio.com

Can anyone share their experience with this amplifier?

- THD: <0.1% typ., <1% at rated power
- frequency response 20Hz - 20KHz

two specs that stand out when I look at the capabilities... high floor noise and it doesn't seem to reach that low for LFE???

Guess it's just not a good amp for movies then. Wonder how it sounds with music......
High floor noise is something you deal with when dealing with tubes.

who do i talk to around here about changing my title from "advanced member" to "specialED member"

Did the OP ever try the amplifier out on his KEF's? Just wondering as he said he "was" in the market for an amplifier and this is the amplifier he chose to advertise.

I have not tried it out yet. I have made an apt with my local dealer to audition that amp with my speakers. I look forward to the results considering my limited budget.

Sorry I didn't see your other post. No this is NOT a home theater amp. This is strictly for 2ch audio. I will post back to give my subjective opinion on the unit. But according to what I've heard from other sources and major AV journalists is that this little amp sounds good.

I knew it was a 2ch audio amp lol. Was just trying to give an intuitive outlook to the poster above me who questioned it's ability with LFE signals instead of just sounding negative.

lol...I thank you for that and we certainly appreciate that bthrb4u. We certainly want to educate here and not put down anyone trying to learn.

I used to live in Pittsburgh awhile back and would run into these guys all the time - in various audio shops. Are they out of Pittsburgh?

I've owned a lot of Rogue gear over the years. It simply cannot be beat for sound quality, build quality, reliability. Wonderful company.

I plan on buying a Sphinx for my hobby shop system in a month or so. It's a terrific sounding amp and an amazing value at the price.

The old meet new tech sounds like it will be a new trend, I think I heard Emotiva alluded to something similar on their last Pod cast..All very interesting I must say. Oh I spoken to some the guy at Rouge and they are very accommodating, willing to work with you...I love that about companies like this.

Has anyone bought one and listened to it at home? The reviews of Rogue's hybrid amps are sensational, I'm wondering how much of the Medusa magic has made it into the Sphinx?

Mark, I suggest a visit to Rogue's factory for lunch today? Who needs to eat when discovering a made in USA gem is waiting?

Way to motivate me! Not yet, it's a bit of a hike from Center City, Philadelphia—where I live. I'll work it out though, I know they are tour-friendly. Thanks for the reminder. smile.gif

Mark, Yes I am trying to motivate you to make a trip to Rogue. I'm told he can't keep up with demand? Bruno says Rogue is using an OEM UCD 180 module which has some Ncore trickle down technology, combine that with Mark's knowledge of tubes and his successful Hybrid power amps, Hydra/Medusa, the Sphinx might be the sleeper of the year. It combines UCD/Ncore output, tube front end (tube rolling here we come), linear power supply, phono stage and remote, and is made in PA! No formal reviews yet, but one owner of 6 tube amps is keeping it, yes he rolled the tubes but he is enjoying the sonics. So yes, please make the trek and let us in on any inside info, and your impression of the Sphinx on whatever system they have at Rogue.

Mark, Please try to make the trek to Rogue soon. I understand they give out lollipops for people who take the factory tour. LOL

I've made contact with Mark O'Brien and arranged for a visit within the next two weeks. We'll audition the gear on his personal reference system, built around a pair of Wilson speakers. Details forthcoming.

Mark, Thanks for arranging the tour. If possible, see if you can precisely control volume on the Sphinx, getting the right level with the wand. The only negatives I've read about the Sphinx are people having to get up and physically rotate the knob to get the level they wanted, using remote had volume too soft or too loud. I hope you get to hear the Sphinx, Medusa, and some tubes to make a comparison on the same system. Have fun!

I just learned that the Sphinx will be at the Capital Audiofest in room 608, John Gatski's Everythingaudioreview.com suite driving Legacy Studio HDs. John will also be doing some in suite live recording, and then playback for comparison. If you are in the DC metro area, please come and support this growing event, July 26-28.
