I think it has more to do with the fact that quite a few receivers are including upscaling to 2160p as part of the feature set— the money is already spent for that function. The question becomes.

Does one need more than a monitor if a hockey puck, tablet, console or computer takes care of streaming and a receiver takes care of the scaling and image processing? For me the answer is a resounding "no"— honestly, all I want is the panel, which I will gladly drive at full 2160p resolution using a high-end video card.

I've had it about a week now and I can't watch movies on it because of the lack of contrast ratio, common to cheap lcd. I do however want a great upscaler for tv and br to see if there is a 1 point bump. It has been hard to figure out what are the good chips because reviewers are not strictly comparing upscaling on different receivers. One reviewer said it introduced similiar artifacts that he sees in the oppo. But the seiki doesn't upscale just doubles the dots so that doesn't make sense. Tried it on a friends 2012 onx and no real improvement. I'm hoping that is not a good chip and there are better upscaling chips. Got 1600 with a gtx 580 and liked that, ordered a titan though.

Looking at those pictures of the service menu i noticed that it offers calibration for gray scale tracking (2-point controls for R/G/B gain + offset) but no controls whatsoever for colorimetry to optimize location, saturation and brightness for R/G/B primaries and C/Y/M secondaries colors; That is unfortunate unless these units are shipped fully calibrated from the factory and considering its low price that is difficult to believe.

Usually DCC stands for Dynamic Contrast Control. Check it out: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=dynamic+contrast+control

Advise that cannot be repeated enough for those that bought the Seiki; Turn.The.Sharpening.To.ZERO.
Particularly important for true 4K material.

Price dropped $100 - waiting for that $1000 price point.

Maybe waiting a while - it's rated #2 Best Seller at Tiger Direct.

Amazon in the US has dropped the price:

http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE50UY04-50-Inch-120Hz/dp/B00BXF7I9M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371487314&sr=8-1&keywords=seiki+4k

Still up in Canada! How long?

Went Back Up so Fast from a low of $965, that my head is still spinning! Now cheaper in Canada then Amazon US, although there maybe cheaper outlets in the US.

Then again, maybe time to go the extra mile!

http://un85s9.com/

Extra mile? Try hundreds of Extra Miles! Like 40,000 of them! Got a quote for $1150 including Free shipping - may go for it later in July.

Wait over. Price didn't quite get to $1000, but $1099 close enough. Should be here later this week. Let the fun begin!

Once calibrated this is an Amazing TV - will be posting my observations and results in the Official Seiki Forum. (Secret to the Seiki, after calibrating, shut down overnight, restart the next day. Milky Blacks gone, to be replaced with Excellent Blacks!)

Florescent Green with Red Push, and overdone Blues. Have e-mailed Seiki if this is Normal, or just my Panel. 4K and Blacks looked good, except for the previously mentioned. Also won't pass the S&M 2 Video Processing 24 Motion Tests.

And as if 50" wasn't small enough for 4K, now Seiki brings out a 39" variant which can be had for $649 via Tiger Direct w/ a coupon until tomorrow.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm sitting 24 inches away from a 26 inch 1080p computer monitor, so how can the perceived pixel sizes be so much smaller if I'm 48 inches away from a 50 inch 2160p monitor? Aren't they the same?

No, it's the same only if you're 48 inches away from a 50 inch 1080p monitor. But because it's 2160p, the image will be 4x sharper.

Actually, the image will be twice as sharp, not four times. Four times the pixels=twice the resolution, and 2160p pixels appear the same size as 1080p pixels at exactly half the distance.

Right; MTF (modulation transfer function), which measures resolution, works along a line of video information, not an area, and the lineal pixel density increase is 2X.
