Reason I ask is because many of my clients move "backwards" from their Krell pre-pro (and alike) to Pioneer SC 57 and SC 68 run in pre-pro mode and use their power amps and/or monoblocks (some Mark Levinson, some Krell, some Classe)

It seems to me that buying an AVR and only using the preamp part of it is wasting money. Plus, I agree with comfynumb that a dedicated pre/pro might well have better parts internally, since the manufacturer doesn't have to fit or pay for power amplification in the same chassis. Then there's the issue of heat from the power amp section potentially shortening the life of the preamp components, though if it's class-D, that's not so much of an issue.

Heat and shared transformer should not be an issue when it comes to receiver used in pre-pro mode because the amp section is turned off completely. However, in a sample case of Pioneer SC-79 ($3000) I don't think it's a waste to buy the receiver and using it in pre-pro mode because you'll still be spending less than, say, the Acurus.

Sound quality may be a different discussion altogether, I'm just talking about the heat issue, power consumption, shared transformer, and "waste".

Has anyone had the opportunity to listen to the Acurus 5 or 7 channel amps? How is the sound quality?

I don't know of any receivers that do that.

Denon claims to, but all they do is turn of the signal input to the power amp boards.

More of an energy/heat issue than SQ though.

Pioneer SC-67/68, the upcoming SC-75/77/79 actually shut off the amp section.

Mark,

I have not listened to any of the new Acurus amps but have owned (2) A150's, (1) A250, (2) 200FIVE's, (1) A200, and still own an A200x3 and an A200. With that said, if the new Acurus line of amps are anything like the older ones(punchy, neutral, detailed, great imaging, and great build quality) and plus the new ethernet monitoring and controls, the sound quality "should" be as good or better than before.

It appears the ratings are not as modest as say NAD. Their power rating does not appear to be an all channels driven simultaneously rating. THD looks to be a little high. At least they are being transparent though. The new stuff looks great. The old stuff sounded really good for the money. Other than flashing LEDs they were usually very reliable. Its nice to see some of the old names coming back and holding true to the quality aspect. Aragon is back too. Very nice.

A2007
Power output 200W into 8Ω, multiple channels driven
300W into 4Ω, multiple channels driven
Number of channels driven for rated power 7 channels, music at 50% duty cycle
4 channels, continuous sine wave
THD < 0.03%, multiple channels driven, full power, 8 ohms
< 0.05%, multiple channels driven, full power, 4 ohms.
