Sony PlayStation fanatics take note: The official debut of the next-generation console from Sony—the PS4—is officially set for November 15, 2013. That is plenty of time to make sure shelves are full of PS4s; the date was likely chosen to catch a sales boost from this year's Black Friday sales events. The European launch of the new system will follow two weeks later, on November 29.
Quote:
"In total, Sony expects to launch the PS4 in 32 countries before the end of the holiday season. That's pretty ambitious, but with 1,000,000 pre orders already in the bank, we'd say the company has plenty of reason to be optimistic." - Engadget

There is no word yet on when the competing Xbox One from Microsoft might hit store shelves, but missing the start of the holiday shopping season seems like a bad idea, considering the PS4 already sports a lower MSRP than the $499 Xbox One.

I'm glad to see that it is coming out close to the same time as the X1.

I dont want to start a fanboy war in here at all but what games is everyone most excited about?

Mine are:
The Division
Watch Dogs
Project Spark
Infarmous Second Son
Knack(iffy)

Most of these are also available on computer so I am not that interested in either console as of yet.

One thing that has me curious about both systems is the claimed support for 4k and how that will work out.

Both systems look great, cant wait for the craze when they hit store shelves around holiday season.

Edit:

I would like to point this article out about 4K and screen size...there are some charts toward the end of the article:

The question here is, will the PS4 support DVD-A and SACD? The original launch PS3(fat) supported both. However, the slim redesign dropped SACD support and the DVD-A support was only for the lossy multi-channel codecs (Dolby, DTS) and didn't support the lossless portion. I don't really see the PS4 supporting SACD, but there's no reason for it to not support DVD-A. Inquiring minds want to know...

Sony can keep it (I'm not jumping at the prospect of another M$ console either, for those who might assume it to be so).

I've ordered one, but I thought it would be further away. smile.gif Now that it's coming I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my PS3. I rarely play older console once newer ones come out. I will probably continue buying most non-exclusive titles on PC.

I play older consoles for years. I still have my PS2 hooked up (Thanks for not making the slim B/C Sony!) because there are still games I haven't finished or yet to play on it.

I even still play PS1 games via my PSP (and I may continue to do so if I decide to upgrade to Vita)

I plan to pick up an Xbox One and PS4 within the first few months of launch. However, the only two launch window games which excite me are Ghosts and Forza. But, those two should take up plenty of my time smile.gif

I'm not a fan of MMORPG (or any online gaming except poker) but this looks absolutely sick.

however, i'm peeved about the lack of backward compatibility.

i'll end up getting an Xbox One or a PS4... i think the apps will be the deciding factor though, not the games.

i honestly think i'll end up buying whichever one does less first. i HATE the idea of a game system doing anything other than playing games. i know i'm not in the majority, but it's the way i feel. i like buying specialty tools that do one thing phenomenally well, and not multitools that do everything sorta ok.

it's always been my experience that any extra features will be clumsy and annoying to operate if they work at all. relative to using my console to play games, my BD player to watch movies, and the HTPC to stream etc.

So does anyone know what video processor will be used for the blu ray player on the PS4? I'm wanting to pick up a Sony S790 to replace my PS3 for movie watching but at 399 I may get the PS4 IF it will offer similar PQ.

Wouldn't it just use its own video processing capabilities, which are equivalent to a mid-level PC with a medium-high level video card.

The only reason for me to buy a PS4 would be if GTA V got ported with better graphics.

+1 waiting for that answer and it's up scaling capability to decide between Sony S790.

It's discussed everywhere- it's an all-AMD setup in both the PS4 and XBox. I just picked up the S5100 for $99 all-in else I'd have waited and bought the PS4 instead.

Will the PS4 have the same or better Blu-ray 3D playing capability that comes with the PS3? Anyone know if that Disney game where you actually visit the theme park that has been exclusive to XBox will now finally be available on the PS4?

Oh, regarding backward compatibility I see the PS4 is not, but will the XBox One avoid this fatal flaw? Any chance the XBox One will now also incorporate the Blu-ray 3D playing capability of the PS3?

It's weird how many of you guys have very specific questions about answers that have been out since June. Seems to be the kind of questions you'd already know answers to if you know enough to ask these questions. I know that sounds weird, I'm just saying...
PS4 will have future 4K support, if that means anything to you in regards to the BD player.

Wasnt the PS4 going to have some PS3 games digitally though?

I am interested in which one has better bluray playback as well and how well it will compare to something like an Oppo.

My 14 year old son has been cutting lawns all summer to get one. I guess that means I'll be ordering one from amazon as soon as they're shipping. My wife will be glad since we can move his old PS3 into the master bedroom and she can use Netflix with it.

I wouldn't buy any of the new consoles based on their level of UHD support. Even if they support it, the standards will quickly change and whatever they support will be obsolete by the time you get a UHD capable TV. I don't think the PS4 will be any better than the PS3 in terms of image quality other than what you get with a better graphics card.

Pre-ordered the Launch edition and BattleField 4 and this should occupy a good part of the winter for me. Watch Dogs, The Division, Infamous are the ones I want to check out also.

I didn't start caring about it until now.

I googled specifics on blu ray playback and didn't find what I was looking for (at first glance) and tbh, I didn't think it would just use the AMD gpu for video processing. For some reason I thought they'd use a standalone one which of course would make 399 harder to hit.

I was hoping someone else would ask this dumb question but you guys are all too smart.

Assuming you ordered the launch day PS4 or bundle, does this mean we will actually have the PS4 in our hands on 11/15? Or, will it ship that day?

Depends.... only Amazon would offer the release date delivery anyway. If they do, then yes. If not, or you ordered somewhere else, then no, it will only ship them.

I am on track to pick up both at launch.

Is there an RPG out for the PS4 at launch?
