Sorry...the video had to be re-edited, and I forgot to post the new one. It's available now.

at 2:20 in the video what aspect ratio did he say? Could not make it out clearly. Not 2.35:1, not 16:9 (1.78), did he say 2.85??

That's what I thought, so did some aspect ratio 101 during my lunch break.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)#Previous_and_currently_used_aspect_ratios
300px-Filmaspectratios_svg.svg.png

The aspect ration of the VPL-VW600ES 4096 x 2160 gives 1.89:1 as it's native, slightly wider than the 1080p pj's 16:9 1.78.
So, I'm scratching my head at his saying "2.85" and the significance of him stating that.....

I believe we can all agree that, yes he said 2.85:1, but really meant 1.85:1. After around 300 interviews it is understandable that people start to mix up numbers at times.

Those 2 interviews were - and now all together - FANTASTIC. (just a little reference to your 11 fantastic in 6 minutes)

So a "normal" anamorphic lens designed for 16:9 PJ with 1.33 expansion will stretch this image then to 2.52:1?
Hmmm, what have those with the 1000 been doing on their existing scope screens?

With the 1000 in normal mode the aspect ratio is 1.78 (16:9) so the anamorphic stretch is correct.

So what usage is the full panel mode 1.85 for?
As screens are currently either 16:9 or scope (2.37:1, 2:39:1, 2.40:1, close enough).

I can't believe the babble on this thread about the guy making a typo in the form of a misspeak re an aspect ratio. And Scott going positive gaga at the $15K price. Maybe he should have said well a lot of my audience thinks that's a little high and why is it so much more here in the US than in Europe and Canada? These are questions a AV reporter should ask. smile.gif

The real thing the first guy screwed up and you guys let him completely off was his reference to the server as a being a box. A box? A box! Well time to get the box out of here said this old hockey player. smile.gif

Hatbox, actually. Feel free to follow this google images search link, to see what that means.

As for the price, the audience includes folks who do think it is a good deal—and for that level of performance it is a bargain at this point and time.

Can you please supply evidence of a pricing disparity. I am not aware of one.

You can just basically ignore the fact that the Sony projectors are the 1.9ish ratio. Depending on content ratio, you just plan on not using the full panel (in most cases, and this is what I do with my motorized masking CIH screen). You get more panel than UHD, and much more than 1080p, so it is a moot point.

Matt

UMR on HDR vs 4K: The benefit of greater saturation and luminance capability is...not very evident in all images unlike more pixels which can be seen in every scene.

Indeed, that is one of the best things about a 4K projector, essentially lossless rendering of any aspect ratio from a 2K source. It's called an "economy of abundance."

It maybe in the shape of a hatbox but its not a box within the commonly accepted meaning with the AV trade and its consumer base. Nice box can mean many many things but Sony's hockey puck is not a box. I'd be banned if I posted about some of the nicest boxes I have even seen. But I would never violate a NDA.
