The PlayStation 4 set a launch-day sales record for video game consoles—the company reports that one million units sold in the first 24 hours. The previous sales record belonged to the PlayStation 2, with a half-million sales on day one. The launch was limited to North America, so sales are likely to accelerate as the new system becomes available in Europe and Japan.

Day-one sales of the PS4 set a record, with over one million units sold.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft can match Sony's initial sales success with its Xbox One, which comes out this week. One million units has a catchy ring to it, and I wonder if Sony's lower price point (versus the Xbox One) contributed to its success. Can Microsoft match or beat the PS4's day-one sales record? One thing is certain, console gaming is far from dead. Now comes the tough part—deciding which system to buy.

They would have sold one million and one if they hadn't sold out.

I always try to wait for the second run of consoles so they can iron out the bugs and patch em.

The new ps4 looks nice, but I heard that it doesn't sit completely level. Strange since sony is usually on point with their aesthetics and the fit and finish on their products.

Hope you guys are all enjoying your ps4s. What games are you guys getting into so far?

i'm guessing this includes the pre-sales as well?

not sure it's fair to compare the day 1 sales of consoles from before the online shopping trend to now. i'm guessing a good portion of those sales were placed in september, haha.

i doubt very much the xbox one will surpass this. it's more risky, and personally speaking, the issues the ps4 had at launch, just sealed the deal that i won't buy a new console anytime soon.

somebody posted a thread about guys trying to sell them on ebay for 2500bux, and how they were still available in stores

Well, Sony knew they had over one million pre-orders before Friday. But the pre-orders were not pre-sales, people still had to pay the balance when they picked it up. I'm sure the pre-orders helped Sony gauge demand. I'm sure plenty of online orders were placed before Friday. As an indicator of overall demand, it's still very impressive. I wonder how long before the PS4 surpasses the Wii-U's total sales.

Too bad that half of those sales were probably from non gamers, but from people looking to make money off others. I swear all the preorders that were available from stores in my area are all on craigslist.

I'm one of the million that have one and I'm one of more than a few that are disappointed.

I don't think the gigantic headlight on the front of the controller is useful, it ruined Madden's physics engine, and I don't have a way to stream anything to it.

Super computer with nothing on it. Hooray!

My 14 year old son wants one for Christmas. He's pushing me to get it for him before Thanksgiving. I'll get him one, but don't want to pay sales tax and will only get the $399 unit. He'll be lucky to get it by Christmas.

It does, but historically they've had trouble making consoles available for launch. For comparison Sony was only able to ship, not sell, 200,000 consoles in the first month of PS3 sales. Microsoft was about 350,000 shipped for the 360 for first month.

The next largest console release was for the handheld Game Boy Advance at around 850,000 in it's first month, and it was much cheaper and arguably targeted a broader market at the time.

The question is now if Sony can keep this success rolling forward, or if the pent up demand for game consoles was front loaded. And they still have Microsoft's next generation release coming up this Friday to contend with.

I have been very happy with my PS3 over the years. I'm getting a bit too old (read: no time) to be a serious gamer anymore. The shift from one player campaign to online multiplayer play (and $$$ DLC) marked the beginning of the end for me. Even so, I'd consider picking one up if I understood exactly what it does. Or rather, what the improvements are over the PS3. It seems like potentially better graphics but as of yet not much content. Regardless, the new console releases mean the Xbox 360 is finally cheap enough to justify a second console so this is good news all the same.

As it is, I may pick up a cheap Xbox 360 this Christmas and move on to an Oppo once the PS3 kicks the bucket.

Better graphics is one facet, but more power enables you to create larger and more intricate worlds. So for example Skyrim wouldn't have to be so empty.

"There have been several issues reported, which leads us to believe there isn't a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units," a spokesperson wrote to me over e-mail.

"We also understand that some units were reportedly damaged during shipping. The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1%, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction.

"We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged."

I do the same thing. Just look at the first SKU's for the Xbox 360. The PS3 wasn't much better either. I've had my PS3 slim since Christmas of 2009 and have had zero issues with it, of course I've changed the thermal paste, cleaned it, and re-greased the blu-ray drive.

It is worth noting that Sony's day one sales for the PS4 beat the Month One sales of any past console. This will be tough to top by anyone.

Stores have also received restocks already, so it is hard to tell which are unsold launch units and which are restocked.

My local Walmart has more PS4s in the back room than they have Xbox Ones for launch, and all of them are on hold for Black Friday.

At this point it is impossible to tell what demand is thanks to this. Mid December will start to paint a picture and January will give us a very good idea. (Just like it did for the Wii U)

One million consoles=$400 million dollars in one day. That is more than the gross of the top 10 box office movies on Friday. About .4% of those are defective. Wonder how many have used the Playstation app for android...it's ok. Very buggy and limited functionality. At least it's much better than other ps apps out there. I'm sticking with ps3 for now until sony works out the bugs with ps4, as i learned my lesson with ps2 and ps3. I bought my first playstation in 1998 when there were some good games like Metal Gear Solid and Parasite Eve. It was also the year of the dual shock, and i'm glad that sony is still making them for each generation. I read a review of the xbox one and they say it's great for entertainment more than games. One advantage that xbox one has is 4k support for games. The ps4 can output 4k but only for photos and movies.

There is no reason with a firmware update that the ps4 couldn't do 4k games, there just is no point as the system is not powerful enough to render games at 4k for anything but very old games.

That is a very common thing for a company to do and thus does not come as a surprise at all. Now if sony was making a profit per sale that would be a surprise.
