AVS Coverage of CEDIA Expo 2014

Be sure to check here often as Scott Wilkinson and Mark Henninger update this post with links to all our coverage of CEDIA 2014!

As summer draws to a close, AV geeks' thoughts turn to the CEDIA Expo, an annual confab hosted by the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association and held this year in Denver, CO. It is perhaps the most highly concentrated gathering of home theater-specific products and companies anywhere—for example, most new home-theater projectors are announced at CEDIA. In addition, this year's show was awash in Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, AVRs, and pre/pros.

Mark Henninger and I scoured the show for all the new audio/video product and technology announcements. If you weren't lucky enough to be there, you can experience the show vicariously through our posts, which we will put in the most appropriate forums. And we will add links to all of them in this master post, so be sure to check back often!

Will Pioneer be there? Pioneer was at IFA in Europe. I'd be surprised if Pioneer doesn't make a 2014 CEDIA appearance! My new Pioneer Elite SC-81 A/V receiver is ariving today. In addition to my yearly tradition of watching the Pioneer CEDIA videos, I think it's cool that I'll be getting one of the new upper-tear receivers on the day of the CEDIA event. It makes me feel like I'm a part of the CEDIA event right from my livingroom!

Pioneer will definitely be here, so stay tuned for news from them!

Glad to hear it! $2K-$3K or higher performance for $1K? Can't beat Pioneer! I can't wait to find out how the new SC-81 will work with my 2011-model BDP-52FD with the PQLS bitstream feature and pure DSD! Still waiting for my SC-81 to arive. Once that arives, I'll have to wait for a good pair of eyes to help me connect the speaker wires, since I don't feel comfortable doing that myself due to my sight impairment. In the meantime, I'll be waiting for some new Pioneer videos!...

Hmmm. I find Pioneer's silence regarding their plans for CEDIA 2014 strange, especially at this stage in the game. While Pioneer's speaker designer Andrew Joans/Jones(sp?) was there discussing Dolby Atmos, I'd like to stay in the know about their flagship mainstream receivers and Blu-ray players.

This extract from a recent DTS Press Release (link) makes me wonder if DTS is presently more focused on the non-movie uses of object-based audio, e.g., broadcast audio, and BD packaged post-broadcast TV show season sales:

The release says DTS will join an Immersive Audio panel on Sept. 15, perhaps someone from AVS will attend and report back.

Pioneer showcase their BDP 85 and BDP 88 ($1000 and $2000 respectively). I'm going there again today to get more details.

With receivers like the SC-81 and up, I think duplicating the analog audio on a player is a waste of manufacturing cost and resources. I don't understand the zero signal terminal. Is that an output used for generating audio/video calibration signals? If not, what does it get connected to and what does it do? Also, I think Pioneer should release a stepup model from the BDP-80FD and BDP-170, while a step down from the BDP-85FD, replacing the BDP-52FD, BDP-53FD, BDP-62FD, BDP-440, BDP-450, and BDP-LX55. That would be perfect!

From their web site (must be brand new this week) -

"The BDP-88FD features a Zero Signal Terminal providing a reference ground for audio/video signals. When connected to a display or AVR, the ground potential between the two devices is minimized resulting in a more accurate signal transmission."

maybe similar idea to eliminating ground hum? have to wait for manual & more info from Pioneer but that's what it's for

Yes! The trinnov sounded great in the Procella room. Definitely very articulate and precise. As far as tonality, it was also great to my ears, but it was difficult to tell where the processor characteristics ended and the room characteristics began (same with the procella speakers). The Altitude is priced a bit high, but I'd own one in a heartbeat.

Yes, I lived with an MC for 3 months. A great piece for sure!

I'll post later tonight when I have a CEDIA break....but I went yesterday afternoon, following Procella/Trinnov with Denon, Pioneer, and the AVS Dolby event. I also checked out Datasat/Auro. Stay tuned....but I would argue both Datasat and Trinnov are worth their boutique pedigree.

There isn't one, at least for the public.

I went to the ADA room at the Hyatt and ADA was running a Marantz SR7009 with a Datasat amp and IIRC 5.1.4 Triad speakers. The point of the demo was more a personal presentation of Dolby Atmos by Richard from ADA than anything else, to show that the technology was "revolutionary" and could sound good even in a rather ordinary, untreated hotel room with "expert consulting help" to set up the room, as Atmos put the listener "back to basics". No Audyssey, no TEQ running Trinnov - I was told that Audyssey was a machete, and their ADA TEQ that could run Trinnov wasn't appropriate for the Atmos configuration. In fact, no REQ at all.

We did get a fair amount of exposure with the Dolby Surround Upmixer, which did offer a nice expansion of the stage to get a sense of envelopment above the listener. He played BluRay cuts from the Rolling Stones and Yanni, of all people.

FWIW, Richard did say that they're working on a Class D 16 channel amp producing 150W/channel at 8 ohms, but I don't think it was in the room.

Audio Gear: Trinnov Altitude 16/24, NAD M27 amps (3)
Video: JVC RS600, Seymour 100" UF Screen, Lumagen Radiance Pro 4444 (coming soon)
Misc.: Oppo 103, Oppo 203 UHD player, JRiver
Speakers: PSB Imagine T3 LCR, Imagine T Wides and Side Surround 1, T2 Side Surrounds, Imagine XB rears, PSB CS1000 ceilings (6), HSU ULS-15 Mk 2 subs (4) - 11.4.6

What is DTS up to...

I'm guilty of being the late reader/poster to the party but found the following 3 Google finds on DTS intriguing. Mainly as folk seem to be CEDIA Blissed with HT/Atmos. DTS seems complacent to let that horse ride while they immerse themselves in Network Connected Devices, and services.

Hi Stuart and thanks for taking time out of a busy schedule to stop by our Suite. You are spot on with respect to the pre/pro and speakers. However, the amplifier we were using is the new PTM-16150 Class D 16 Channel High-Power Amplifier. It is capable of being bridged from 16 channels all the way down to 8 channels where bridged channels output 300W.

While we anticipate shipping this unit by the end of the year, our Suite 7.6 and Cinema Rhapsody Mach V are scheduled for Q1 2015.

Hoping everyone had an amazing CEDIA Expo. I know we did and expect Atmos will forever change home cinema. Can anyone say 1995 CES, Dolby AC-3, True Lies, The Mask, and the Imperial Palace ;-)

Thanks, Richard! I had mistakenly thought that the amp was one of your Class AB ones in the literature I'd picked up. Good to know.

Currently, DTS has a near-monopoly in terms of which format is used on Blu-ray releases. I'm not saying the company should rest on its laurels, but it enjoys a formidable lead in that arena. Dolby does better in terms of market share with compressed/streaming, where Dolby Digital+ will serve as a carrier for streaming Atmos. I bet (with nothing to support my assertion) DTS can make its formats somehow work with Atmos, which might be the best move for the moment.

My understanding is that DTS only has a lead in BD audio because the work-flow used for its software has been significantly more efficient than the competing encoding methods, resulting in a shorter turnaround time for the mixing houses, and thus a lower cost. Supposedly this situation has changed dramatically with the release of Dolby's new Atmos-capable software suite. The times they are a-changing.
