Dozen Dolby Atmos Ultra HD Blu-Ray Titles Arrive Tuesday

Ultra HD Blu-ray is finally here, with both discs and players available for purchase. This Tuesday, March 1 will see the release of a dozen titles in the new format featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks.

The dozen movies are Sicario (Lionsgate), Ender’s Game (Lionsgate), The Expendables 3 (Lionsgate), Mad Max: Fury Road (Warner Bros.), San Andreas (Warner Bros.), Pan (Warner Bros.), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Sony), Salt (Sony), Hancock (Sony), Chappie (Sony), Pineapple Express (Sony), and The Smurfs 2 (Sony).

Considering that the HD Blu-ray Atmos catalog currently stands at 34 total titles, a dozen Atmos Ultra HD Blu-ray titles is actually a good start. A 13th title, Concussion, will be released with an Atmos soundtrack on March 29.

March will also see the release of three HD Blu-ray Atmos titles, namely In the Heart of the Sea (Warner Bros.) on March 8, Game of Thrones Season 5 (HBO) on March 15, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (Lionsgate) on March 22. With these releases, the HD Blu-ray Atmos catalog will reach 37 titles.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that 14 UHD movies with Atmos sound are available to stream on on Vudu. Notably, all the titles come from Warner Brothers. Those movies are: Mad Max: Fury Road, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Gallows, San Andreas, American Sniper, Man of Steel, Jupiter Ascending, Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Storm, Pan, Entourage, We Are Your Friends, Pacific Rim, and In the Heart of the Sea.

Are you excited about the potential of Ultra-HD Blu-ray with Atmos? Do you think that Ultra HD Blu-ray will overtake HD Blu-ray when it comes to the total number of titles with Atmos sound? Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.

Wait wait wait... Man of Steel and Pacific Rim got the ATMOS treatment but only on UHD... okay the moment a physical copy of those are available I am buying them (even if I currently dont have a 4k player or display lol), I love Pacific Rim and thought that movie would be one of the best to show off ATMOS... Does the 4k players currently on the market downgrade to 1080 sources or allow the displays to be 1080p? or is that where the HD Fury come into play?

Can't wait for Man of Steel and Pacific Rim. They would have been better launch titles, than some of the others we've got. "Expendables 3" "Fantastic 4"

Question is how many were shot in 4K, I suspect not that many
Most are shot in or refinished in 2K

Is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 confirmed to have Dolby Atmos? I thought I read somewhere it was going to have DTS:X? I'm hoping for Atmos as my AVR will not decode DTS:X.

Dolby Atmos/DTS:X 5.2.4

I think the 4K discs will be REALLY appealing to me when they can transfer the 4K (or greater) source to the disc without them dropping the resolution (like to 2K) in the process.

I will want to borrow a 4K player and one true 4K disc before I jump on board. While my PJ is 4K (Sony 600ES) it is not UHD. And I keep hearing that the big difference of this new technology is less the increased resolution and more the improved color pallet.

So waiting is the name of the game right now!

This document provides yet another reason to purchase the HD Fury Integral if you want 4K resolution on a device that does not support HDCP 2.2!!

Sicario might be the sleeper of the bunch..

It is near the top of my best movie of the year pics and I would think the soundtrack that was awesome as is will really shine. Also, the gunfire, helicopter and other ambient sounds might be awesome.

This would be my first grab if my gear could support it (dang I'm obsolete already and I just finished my 5.1 yikes )

Have fun with the new format.

I will buy a UHD player exclusively for new Atmos/DTS:X content. My projector is only a couple months old, so I have no plans to upgrade for at least three years. HDFury and immersive audio FTW

Buy the player local at Best Buy (when they get them in stock) and keep the receipt. You can always sell the movie here or on eBay for a slight loss.

I am pleased to learn that 4k bd are coming, and who will come here in Italy, but you have to see construction quality .. that are 2k and upscaled puzzles me with many questions: What future for this format?
Fox:
Exodus: Gods and Kings - 2K DI
Fantastic Four - 2K DI
Hitman: Agent 47 - 2K DI
Kingsman: The Secret Service - 2K DI
Life of Pi - 2K DI
The Martian - 2K DI
The Maze Runner - 4K DI
Wild - 2K DI
X-Men: Days of Future Past - 2K DI

Warner:
The Lego Movie - 2K DI
Mad Max: Fury Road - 2K DI
Man of Steel - OF 2K (film shot in 35 mm)
Pacific Rim - 2K DI
Pan - 2K DI
San Andreas - 2K DI

Sony:
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - 4K (shot on 35mm film)
Chappie (Humandroid) - 4K DI
Hancock - A 4K (film shot in 35 mm)
Pineapple Express (Strafumati) - DI 2K (film shot in 35 mm)
Salt - A 4K (film shot in 35 mm)
The Smurfs 2 (The Smurfs 2) - 4K DI

Although, in terms of resolution, so for now we will have to deal with much of the securities Ultra HD Blu-ray upscaled to 2K master, with respect to colors and HDR we can instead expect a real improvement, as the DI master are all at least 12-bit, issued with DCI-P3 color space and with a dynamic perfectly in line with the specifications of the HDR formats.

But will that be to assert this new format, and then do the upgrade of the entire audio video system?
Not to mention that so far the Italian blu ray have as audio encoding Dolby Digital or Dts 448/640 kbps to 768 kbps .... A bd 4k with this sound would be dead departing.

Yeah, i was in Best Buy in N. Austin (Lakeline) on last Monday 22nd Feb. and they already had a row of about 8-10 UHD BDs + the 1080p BD and DVD combo packs including some of these titles above. I looked at the back of a few and noticed they said Atmos on both 4K and 2K BDs. I get the feeling if the studio already had it in Atmos on BD they aren't going to spend money taking it off, but they certainly wont spend the extra money to put it on the 2K disc when its on the 4K version that was purchased along with it. Interestingly, the price of these was less than $7-8 more than the Blu-ray only version... If I were going to be buying a BD anyway and had a 4K pj (which I don't), I think an extra $7 is easily justifiable (since 3D combo packs currently go for $10 more and the 3D only BDs are going on ebay for $15-20 individually)...I'm saying buy the UHD combo version and sell the UHD to pay for the 1080p BD.

Problem is half of them are mastered from 2K sources.

I am only going to make the jump to 4K once HDR has become established, I see no need to for 4K alone with my current 122" screen 2K and Darbee looks fantastic.

Have you made the jump to Atmos/DTS:X yet? I enjoy the audio enough to purchase the UHD version if it has immersive audio.

That is my thought too.

If the UHD/4K release comes with a Blu-ray that has Atmos, it would be worth it for that alone. Then eventually once I get a UHD player, I will have some titles available.

If they want to limit the Atmos to just UHD/4K releases, then at least include those soundtracks on the BD that comes with it as well. Not doing that and not releasing the same title on BD with Atmos will really hurt the growth of the format.

Why not get an HDFury and buy the UHD version. If it is a combo pack, then sell the BD version and keep the UHD version. I am going to try to stick with UHD only going forward. When native 4k projectors become more affordable ( i.e $3 to $4k) I will definitely upgrade, but I suspect that will be 3+ years from now.

I will need to research this HDFury.....

It would be best if the studios would just release ATMOS soundtracks on the BD as well as the UHD releases. They have been doing it up until now anyways.

So let me see if I understand this correctly..

If my projector isn't a native 4K projector, I can do the following:
1. Purchase a Samsung UHD player(or whatever brand comes out next).
2. Purchase the HDFury
3. Hook the player up with HDFury in the loop.

Then I can play the 4K version of the movie and gain the ATMOS/DTSX sound?
