Monoprice Debuts Monolith K-Bas and Air Motion Speakers at CEDIA 2016

The Monolith line of high-performance, low-cost AV accessories began with a single amplifier, the Monolith 7. Now, Monoprice has introduced a new line of speakers under the Monolith moniker including the K-Bas reference bookshelf speaker ($250 each), and two Air Motion models, a two-way bookshelf ($200 each) and a three-way center channel ($300 each).

The K-BAS reference series bookshelf speaker combines a 5.25" poly/mica woofer with a 1-inch titanium tweeter in a 7.25" (wide) x 15.625" (high) x 13" (deep), 17-pound enclosure. Monoprice says K-BAS stands for Kinetic Bass Amplification System and that the design allows the speaker to reproduce low bass that you can feel from a compact cabinet.

Specs for the K-BAS bookshelf include 87 dB/W/m sensitivity, 39 Hz to 20 kHz (+/-3dB) frequency response, a 3000 Hz crossover point, 50-watt RMS, 150-watt peak power handling, and an impedance that ranges between 6 and 8 ohms (4.2 ohm minimum).

The Monolith Air Motion series speakers currently consists of two models. The bookshelf ($200 each) is a two-way design featuring an air motion transformer tweeter and a 5.25" paper-cone mid/bass driver. The braced enclosure measures 11.25" (high) x 7.4" (wide) x 9.75" (deep) and weighs 14.3 pounds. Maximum input power is rated at 200 watts and recommended amplification is 15-180 watts. The sensitivity rating is 87 dB/W/m, the crossover is set at 2800 Hz, and it is compatible with 8-ohm amps.

The Monoprice Air Motion 3-way center channel ($300) features the air motion transformer tweeter, a 3" paper-cone midrange, and twin 5.25" paper-cone woofers. Its braced enclosure measures 9" (high) x 18" (wide) x 9.85" (deep) and weighs 26.4 pounds. Power handling is rated at 200 watts maximum and recommended amplification is 15-180 watts, just like the bookshelf model. The sensitivity rating is 87 dB/W/m.

These new speakers and additional Monolith gear (including several new amplifiers plus a prototype subwoofer) will be on display at CEDIA 2016, I'll update this post once I get a chance to check it out.

Would love to see a bookshelf side by side performance wise against the Dayton B652-Airs and the Emotiva Airmotivs.

its strange that all of their stuff is so much less expensive than others and then these amplifiers aren't very cheap at all.

Really?? I think $1500 for a 7 channel amp is a damn good price. It's cheaper then a Gen3 Emotiva by $400. Sure, you could spend less, but you'd be getting used gear or multiple amps. Maybe it's just me??

i always find monoprice a pretty good indicator of the markup on products. if anything, this just means that amplifiers aren't the crazy rip off that most speakers and cables are. personally, i'd probably be skeptical of something like a $500 7channel amp, even from monoprice. don't get me wrong, if the reviews were good, i'd probably give it a shot, but i wouldn't be the first to try.

Are you aware of a cheaper ~80lb 7-channel class AB amp made in a developed country? I'm not, at least not new.

Emotivas older XPA-3 was under $800 irrc. I think the XPA-5 was $999? Monoprice's 3 channel amp is going to be $999

Why relatively "low" sensitivity?
or are these intended more for near field listening so not needed higher efficiency?

If their speakers are like the rest of their products, they'll sound great for the money, but don't move them around too much or the enclosures will fall apart.

At this price point, they're competing with the other ID speaker companies and the build quality should be on par.

Don't forget Outlaw Audio, but then again the 7125 from them is less powerful and their more powerful 7 channel models do cost more.

It's interesting that the K-BAS speaker has the woofer mounted above the tweeter. I'm also wondering if the enclosure uses a similar design to the H-PAS technology that Atlantic Technology developed.

Pioneer SC-95
Epos Epic 2(LCR), Emotiva UAW 6.2(Rear), Aperion Intimus LC-I6(In-ceiling Atmos/DTS:X)
x2 Dayton Ultimax 18" sealed(subs), Behringer Inuke 6000DSP(sub amp),
Vizio P-65C1 LED HDR
Oppo UDP-203 HD-Blu Ray Player, Oppo DV971H DVD Player, Roku Premiere+

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, the answer is yes, the tech is licensed from AT, it is essentially H-PAS.

Out of the scope.

Older ≠ current production.

Old Emotive ≠ made in a developed country.

Is the Monoprice amp made in a "developed" country, as you call it?

It's an open secret that these amps are made by ATI in California.

"Developed" and "developing" countries are terms of art with defined meanings. A "developed" country has a per capita GDP of at least 12k USD (the average is 35-40k USD). I just looked up China. Their per capita GDP is under 8k USD. See http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD. So, no it is not.

The point is that labor costs are necessarily higher in developed countries, because workers make more. Whether that influences one's purchase decision or not is up to the individual, but it is a fact.

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. What power requirements do the Monoprice Air Motion Cinema 5 bookshelves (and the center) atually require? They have a max/peak of 100 and 200 watts, but how many watts do they need to run?

For example, right now I have an Onkyo NR-807 and I run Infinity Primus P362 towers and C350 center as well as P163 surrounds. CNET says the P362 has a recommended amount of 10 watts.

Essentially, I just want to know how much amplifier I will need to run a 5.1 system with the Monoprice Air Motion Cinema 5. I really don't think i will be buying anything more powerful than that anytime soon in my life (probably not even upgrading from my infinity speakers...sigh)
