Does the new Monoprice sub have what it takes to take on the competition?

In just a few hours the number has already decreased from 122db to 119db, so yeah...

Snarky comments aside, from the DIY crowd... I'm sure this would be a nice subwoofer system.

Just....not 100% aligned with the numbers attached to it.

Maybe by tomorrow it'll work its way down to ~113db, which is actually realistic.

yea i didn't mean to derail this thread so hard. im sure it will end up being a nice sub and it could very well be a great value/$$$ spent. I would also like to see what it does in the real world

TBH when i first read this yesterday i didn't even notice it, then today that stood out at me like a beacon in the night.

I got a demo of this sub and was very impressed. The spec sheet was impressive and when cranked up the thing seemed to move a lot of air. We were in the convention center obviously, so I wouldn't consider this critical listening. However, I did leave very excited about the potential of this sub. I will toss out that it wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing sub woofer I've ever seen, the finish definitely looked like a place where they have shaved some cost. Personally I can live with that compromise, but to each their own.

I did discuss price briefly and they indicated it would likely be in the $1200-$1500 ballpark.

That prototype has a hand-applied vinyl finish that is not a reflection of what the final product would look like, according to Monoprice.

Interesting, I was under the impression that TC had gone under once again. TC has great tech but Thilo is a terrible business man and had burned a lot of people in the audio world, badly, not sure I would put my trust in him if I were Monoprice.

Mark said Thilo was "lobbying to send to data bass" which suggests to me he's not running the show and under Monoprice's thumb. Plenty of brilliant people with terrible business sense, could be a great relationship.

I was suprised at the lack of balanced output as well, it would compete with Emotiva with them. Seems like they forgot or dont want a head to head with them

Did a little "best guess".

Edit: Response is at 2.83v, I know that looks goofy with the input screen.

Edit2: Yes, I fat fingered the SD, but it only gets better when it's fixed anyway.

Probably just miscommunication of some sort. Extension down to 20Hz, sure. 122dB peak / 119dB RMS output at 2 meters at another frequency (say 50Hz+), possibly. 122dB (or even 119dB) at 2 meters at 20Hz, ground plane? I'm willing to bet $100 that it won't meet or exceed a Cap 4000 ULF. You game?

I'm not gonna publish private emails but there's no miscommunication. It started as 122 dB, which was posted at CEDIA, and we wound up at 119 dB "just to be safe" because of this thread. CEA2010 peak burst, 20 Hz, 2 meters. Not sure what else to say, I don't have one and therefore have no idea how it measures. I'm just the messenger here.

I'll take that as a no Still, my offer is open to Thilo if he's that confident. Send sub to Josh, meet or beat the Cap 4000 ULF at 20Hz, win $100 of Steve1981's money.

Keep in mind Data-Bass burst numbers are 2 meter/rms so you have to add 9db for a 1 meter/peak

I'm pretty sure that the distances are mixed up. Looking at the size of the box, huge vent, and massive power, I can see this sub doing 122 at 1m, but at 2m, sorry, that's wrong. 119 is also wrong at 2m. Not in this universe at least.

Glad to hear that the finish isn't what it is going to be sold with.

As far as the numbers being presented, I would agree they are dubious at best. Obviously my demo was not under conditions where I could do any kind of measuring, nor was it in any form a critical listening session. While I don't buy the numbers being put out there, the fact remains that even with more realistic numbers I think this may prove to be a solid option, especially if monoprice can keep the price down. I'm not sure where the gain was at or how hard the sub was working when I heard it, but I thought the performance was more in the ballpark of my SVS PC12-Plus. My Ultra hits with more authority then I heard from the monoprice sub last week. Again, there are so many factors here to consider, so don't take this as anything more then the 5 minute demo that it was.

I would very much like to see actual measurements on this sub. I think it will likely test well, despite what appears to be some inflated stats up to this point.

This is exciting.

The reason I mention this... the 7 channel Monolith has gotten down to $1499 or less with Monoprice coupons before. Say this were to be $1,200 and were in stock.. the current 15% site coupon would put the sub at around $1,080 with free shipping (usually on these deals). That's quite nice if it's a high performer.

Josh doesn't use the "peak" SPL value, so the 119db is now down to 116db.

Honestly I think 116db is still too high.

Not everyone thinks the math is impossible. Glad you guys have such high confidence though. I gotta tell you, the folks on the other side have high confidence, too. I'm still playing the part of neutral party; if I get more info I'll publish it.

Fair enough.

It's stats for products like this is why Data-Bass.com exists in the first place.

Objective data > marketing

Good luck to Monoprice!

Is the "other side" the designer and distributor?

I'm still shocked you're buying these numbers when we have the cold hard facts saying otherwise.

A fact would be a measurement of the sub, which nobody commenting here has done.

Nah, just some folks over on Facebook...
