I'm posting this on Super Bowl Sunday (now the day after) because the bug for this hobby really hit me three years ago today, on a Super Bowl Sunday. I've had a projector since the Optoma HD70 came out in 2006 and so my wife and I started having Super Bowl parties for our group of friends. In 2009, this was the equipment list-

Optoma HD70 mated with a DaLite Model B screen
Infinity Interlude IL50's, IL25c center, and four Infinity CS-20 In-ceiling speakers
Onkyo 606 Receiver
Xbox 360
Onkyo DV805 HD DVD player

Not a bad setup, considering the projector was about $900 and nothing else over $300. The Interludes put a decent bass in my 23x14x8 room and the in-ceiling surrounds were fun and had a high WAF. The Super Bowl in '09 had Springsteen as the halftime show and we have a couple of friends who are HUGE Boss fans so as the halftime show came on I cranked the volume to about -12 which was louder then I usually played things. The show went on and my friends were getting into it but I was a bit disappointed by the sound. So I cranked it to about -7 still disappointed -3.no dice and all the way to 0. My friends were happy with it and no one said anything but nice things, but I knew I needed some better stuff. And so it began-

I began with getting an outboard sub, an old HSU sono sub that I scored for $200. Very cool and a big improvement over the Infinity bass and there was a great clone idea on the web so I grabbed some sonotube, an eD driver, and a Behringer amp and built a second. WOW bass was in good shape. Read a bunch on speaker upgrades and listened to Polk, Klipsch, Bostons, B&W ($$$), and finally Def Techs. The B&W was best, but I promised the wife I would not spend more then $1000 on any upgrades for the room. Really liked the DT 7002's but my Best Buy never got them cheap enough so I waited and looked at fleabay and CL. Finally Christmas of 2010 arrived and a guy in St Louis had this-

BP30 towers, CLR2000 center, BPVX surrounds, PF15TL sub all for a grand, original boxes, mint condition, everything perfect.

I grabbed that setup, moved the sub and surrounds (wife still liked the in-ceilings grrr) for ~850, leaving me a new front three for about $150. Yeah that was a deal. And an UPGRADE! Next was receiver, Blu-ray player, etc. 1080p projectors got cheap so the Optoma went and a Mitsubishi HC3800 came in. Started reading about cinemascope and scored a CAVX MKIII and built a Wilsonart screen. Fast forward to today and the list is-

BenQ W6000 with the MKIII, 115 inch DIY 2:35 Wilsonart Laminate Screen
Definitive Technology BP2000 fronts, CLR2000 heights, CLR3000 center, SM450 surrounds, BP30 rear surrounds
Def Tech Trinity in one corner
Dual AV123 MFW-15's stacked in another corner
Denon 4311ci receiver
Xbox 360 Elite
Onkyo DV805 HD DVD player
Pioneer 320 Blu-ray (ugh sooooo slow looking at upgrades but not going to spend more then $150 so that rules Oppo out)

The audio calibration is all the receiver, the video is DVE Essentials though I just purchased the Calman Display2 deal so that'll be an upgrade. As stated the room is 23x14x8 with eight foot openings to the dining room and front foyer that can be closed off with curtains. At some point French Doors will go in the foyer opening which will help. I've painted the ceiling with a Ralph Lauren texture paint so while not dark, much better then the white it was. At some point I'll probably get the jones to upgrade subs, but since the only time I've broken my $1000 pledge was the Trinity and the Denon justifying something like a Submersive will probably not happen and that's fine. With as much speaker and sub as I have I know I'm not missing on much. Anyway it's a great room IMO and my wife and 4 year old love it and the Super Bowl party is always a big hit. Too bad Madonna will be the halftime show this year the sound will suck but I'll know its not my equipment!

looking good! Nice set up!

Yea the half time show sucked..

No subwoofer I've heard has been able to produce the bass I've experienced in the Corps!

Must..stop...buying...every bluray release...

The shelf over the screen was originally in place to hold the center channel when my wife was still of the idea that speakers should be as minimal as possible. When she finally conceded more bigger speakers resulted in more better sound I built the cabinet below the screen for the center and to hold blu-rays cd's etc. Currently the top shelf is DVDs (not watched much but I can't bring myself to ditch them yet. Parties are a blast...the super bowl was fun even if the game was blah, the commercials dull, and halftime...yeah
