Well, here we go, buiding a new system for a smallish 5.1 theater room, should be fun.

Here's my system:
Marantz AV8801 Pre-amp/Processor
Parasound A51 amp
Monitor Audio GS-Series speakers (GS-60 fronts, GS-LCR center, GS-FX rears)
JL Audio F110 subwoofer
Oppo BDP-105 universal player
Sony SCD-XA5400ES SACD player
Furman Elite PF-15 conditioner
Pioneer Elite PDP-4280 Kuro 42in plasma TV

Also in process purchasing Epson projector.

My room is essentially 10ft X 10ft. Will be very close fit in regards to providing proper FL/C/FR speaker clearance from front wall and viewing distance.

Need help, or ideas, choosing a movie screen of some type.

I'm considering possibly a retractable screen, ceiling mounted (out from front wall maybe 10in to 12in), such that it can be opened (pulled down) in front of wall-mounted Kuro flat-screen.

Also still deciding on projector models: Panasonic PT-AE8000U, BenQ SP890 Projector, Epson Home Cinema 5020UB, Epson Home Cinema 3020E Projector? ($1300.00 to $2200.00)

Viewing distance approx 9.0ft

Nice gear that you have there! I would recommend that you replace the rca interconnects with XLR ones.

I see that the second source has an XLR output so who's going to use the XLR input of the Marantz?

Concerning the screen, a lot of people here will recommend the stewart screens.

Great start, and good luck!

Will the room be well-controlled for ambient light when watching the projector? Will the projector be ceiling mounted or on a shelf behind the viewing area?

thanks for your input.

Most all of the wiring/cabling shown are from my previous set-up's (using NAD T175 and AV7005 pre-pro's). I just literally positioned these three new components onto each respective shelf (from top-to-bottom: Parasound A51, Oppo BDP-105, AV8801, SCD-XA5400ES). I'm now definitely switching to XLR's where possible.

Connection list:
1. AV8801 5.0 XLR pre-OUT's to Parasound A51 5.0 XLR INP's
2. AV8801 SW1 XLR pre-OUT to JL Audio F110 XLR INP
3. Oppo BDP-105 2ch XLR OUT to AV8801 2ch XLR INP (I figured the Oppo has the updated analog circuitry, not sure how it compares to Sony?)
4. Oppo BDP-105 5.1ch OUT to AV8801 5.1ch EXT RCA INP
5. Oppo BDP-105 HDMI OUT 1 to AV8801 HDMI IN 3 (BluRay)
6. Oppo BDP-105 Digital Coaxial OUT to AV8801 Digital Audio IN 2 DVD (I figured I'd like to compare the Marantz DAC's)
7. Sony SCD-XA5400ES 2ch RCA OUT to AV8801 2ch (CD) RCA INP
8. Sony SCD-XA5400ES HDMI OUT to AV8801 HDMI IN 2

thanks.

Yeah, my room is more casually used as media/computer area. So light will be not so well-controlled (watch BluRay and DVD movies at night primarily, not much TV though). Will probably get projector model on the briighter-side?

Projector will be shelf mounted 6ft to 7ft high on wall, or possibly ceiling mounted, literally straight above overhead (I have no choice). I have an issue being there is an air-conditioning vent dead-center in ceiling, close to rear wall surface (projector would have to ceiling-mount forward of vent, or wall mount just below vent)

Ah ok I understand now, that makes perfect sense!!

I would suggest you still compare the Sony to the Oppo over the XLR output and also that you test the stereo rca output of the Oppo compared to the FL/FR or the multichannel outputs.

let me know your thoughts after testng!! wink.gif

Well, here we are, literally three years later...........

My 5.1 Theater Room System:
Marantz AV8802A Processor
Parasound A51 Amp
JL Audio F110 Subwoofer
Pioneer Elite PDP-4280 42in Kuro Display
Epson Home Cinema 3020 Projector
Elite VMAX2 Electronic Retractable Screen (16:9, 92in diagonal)
Furman Elite PF-15i Conditioner
Oppo BDP-105 BluRay/Media player
Sony SCD-XA5400ES CD/SACD player
Monitor Audio Gold GX100 Fronts
Monitor Audio Gold GXC350 Center
Monitor Audio Gold GSFX Rears

Sounding very nice. Just getting things dialed-in.Still tweaking things here and there. Still learning the endless ways to listen to the various media formats (ie. SACD, DVD-A, BluRay-Audio, CD, etc.,...). Not exactly sure what is best?

This is my first projector experience as well.

Next major project will be to configure and program Global Cache controller to allow iPad remote control.

I have to add:
I love the versatility of this system. I can easily just watch basic TV (cable) without engaging system gear. Or watch TV with system surround. Or, with the simple press of a button, retract projector screen down, watch TV/video sources on the big-screen. Wonderful

Like the room, and the big screen is where it is at. Nothing like it! How do you like the Epson? I chose the Sony over the Epson without a demo, and have always wondered about them.

How do you like the GS to GX upgrade? Especially moving from large towers to bookshelf speakers?
