HtdHvy’s (ever-evolving) Audiophile Home Theater Rig

view of the complete system (prior to the Mark Levinson No 502 & the 2nd pair of Gem2s)

Greetings AVS team. I’ve been a longtime audiophile & home theater enthusiast. I inherited the gift/curse from my father who was reading Stereophile with me on his lap at age 5. My system has been on a rather consistent upgrade trajectory since the early 2000s but I decided to start a thread and share the current iteration. I’ll continue to update as I swap out components.

My usage habits are around: ½ Music, ¼ Movies, ¼ Gaming.

The sound is quite phenomenal, but most of my joy comes from tinkering with the system.

The pics i'm including are a little dated and don’t include the Levinson No 502 (I was previously using a Marantz AV8003 with a Bel Canto DAC3 for 2 channel) or the second pair of Gem2s (I haven’t actually taken them out of the box yet).

I have some tidying up to do with the cabling and equipment rack. I was diligent about it when I first bought my house but with each update to the system I’ve gotten a little sloppier.

I am toying with the idea of building a dedicated theater/listening room in the basement. Early stages.

Anyway, thanks for reading and please feel free to leave feedback, share comments or ask any questions.

Love the gear and the Herman chair!

Wouldn't the front speakers sound better pulled out from the back wall?

Thanks Drew. They would sound a little better off of the wall, but my lady wouldnt go for it, lol. When I first bought them, i had set them up in the middle of the bedroom and they sounded unbelievable. But that arrangement lasted about two weeks.

I am thinking about moving all the equipment into the basement and doing a dedicated theater room to have more flexibility with placement.

Very nice setup. Things are a bit tight in the room so where are you going to be placing the 2nd pair of Gems? I would be so nervous having such expensive stand mounted speakers in close proximity to a walkway, you are brave

Thanks! I would probably put the second pair of Gems on both sides on the sofa facing the sofa if I set them up in this room but i am considering doing a dedicated theater room in the basement away from foot traffic and the little one.

I just fear the whole system would get used far less down there. It's on pretty much the entire evening in its current location.

howdy, got similar system and similar interests. like tinkering with gear. I've gotten crazed over bass performance and vibration control as of late along with power cleanliness too. I do have a furman it20 ref like you and think its good overall. got some richard gray too. anyway I went for it and got 2 Rhythm2 subs to go in system. salon2 etc. and Wow. having two subs makes a world of difference over 1 I learned. nice set up ya got there, good looking set up you did. cheers

Yeah two subs definitely makes a difference. I started with a single JL f113 before buying the two f212s and the improvement was palpable.

Wouldn't your elbows hit the Gems if they were positioned beside the sofa? A dedicated room would be great for that setup but you make a good point about it not getting used as much as that would probably end up being the case, especially if it wasn't going to be used for causal listening or tv watching.
