I think there is no hope for me, for the rest of you run away!
It started simply enough, my sons left the house and my audio gear that was boxed and stored could now live again without fear of teenagers. Pulled out the pile of equipment and speakers--pondered a few things...hmmm. I have a background in car audio and PA gear from the 90's, I could build some surrounds out of the kid proof speakers...have that amp laying around to drive subwoofers....hmmm. Announce to the wife I'm going to build an HT system out of stuff I have laying around--and SAVING money!
Built the surrounds, it was OK...need more bass...built a sub but saved money because I already had a monster amp. (denial is setting in) Now to build a center channel, drivers, caps, coils, resistors, some more tools, wood etc. show up in the garage. Reading books, measuring, testing and a few revisions later...done!
It would be great to have a good sound system in the garage, have an old receiver laying around...a few years later and line arrays with dual subs are in the garage. Speakers can be ugly in a man cave--for the win! Project is complete, works far beyond what I needed in the beginning though...
Uhhh, geez...wish I had more efficient mains--build new mains! Hmmmm, need more bass so there are three sheets of ply in the garage and subwoofer drivers sitting there.
My excuse is you can't buy end tables with subs built in, have to build them that way for my wife ya see... this is going to kill the summer.
Of course the center is not as efficient as the mains--yep, project next year is a 98 to 99dB 1w/1m center channel to fit the existing furniture--for my wife's aesthetic tastes of course. My original center I built fits the furniture perfectly so the new center will have to fit it perfectly as well. (Set a precident) Then those original surrounds will have to go, time to retire them in a year or two so the new ones besides easily hitting reference levels and sound cleaner--I can build them and paint them to match the walls--for my wife, of course!
So I should be done in 2018, after 8 years I should be content--at least with the speakers/subs/AVR that is. Of course, the AVR has all the stuff for 4K so might need to use that capability with 4K BluRay and maybe a new TV. Have the audio finished, might as well bring the video up to snuff!
I do know there is an end in site, my 2012 to 2015 years were spent getting the man cave to become a night club. I don't think once I'm done with speakers/subs/AVR from 2016 to 2018 that I'll need to mess with the array/sub system in the garage.
Of course, to upgrade the TV and Blurays to 4K, I could put the old TV/bluray in the garage and run 2.2 stereo--close enough. Well, maybe put a center in there for the Super Bowl...man cave 3 channel... yeah.
