Hi all
I really enjoy my current set-up. I have a small bedroom 17x18x9.
Equipment:
Polk Audio LSI9 (2) / LSIC
PBS Ambient Dipole speakers
Onkyo TR-SR705 receiver
Outlaw 7125 Ampilifer
SVS 20-39PCI Subwoofer
ADS 10" subwoofer (Not in use)
Panasonic 55" Plamsa
Panasonic Blu-ray player
Most of this equipment is 8 to ten years old, and only added the TV 5 years ago. I read AVS forum daily. An each day I feel the the urge to upgrade my speakers. I ordered the SVS Prime Speakers and found them to be underwhelming. ( Looking to spend 600 dollar)
I cannot find any speakers to outperform at this price range. This keeps me from upgrading. But I am fooling myself, if I found
something at this price I would not purchase them. Handling the disease by lying to myself

Well, I'm at a point of no need to upgrade equipment. I thought to myself a couple of weeks ago, "I'm good now. My sound is phenomenal. I think I'm at a point that I don't need to purchase anything else... for a while, at least." Those were famous last words. Today? Yep, I'm now looking at upgrading my theater seating. IT NEVER STOPS! Yes! No! Yes!

The battle continues...

Another patient of this disease here in Melbourne Australia where we get the pleasure of paying about 30% more for AV than our friends in the US.
To date I've spent over au$10k on my equipment, and I wonder why I struggle to save the deposit for a house.
I remember when my wife asked me to buy a "small" tv for the bedroom. I came home with a brand new 75" panel and moved the 50" into the bedroom. Problem solved right?

Unfortunately I also collect watches, and I'm into photography.

I'm desperately hoping I'll discover a hobby one day that doesn't involve spending money. I'm not sure if such a unicorn exists.

Anyway, it's Friday and all I can think about is my plans to completely pull the system apart again this weekend. If I keep reconfiguring what I own, maybe I wont have the time to buy more stuff??

(apart from the Blue man group and Roger Waters blurays I bought on amazon last night)

Bought some Magnepan 1.7i speakers earlier this year. And a receiver. ...Seriously thinking of ditching the receiver and getting a high-end dedicated 2ch amp. Then I'll need to get a DAC. ...Why couldn't I be happy with my old Polks?

My last two purchases were my Paradigm SE-1's and my Bluesound Vault 2. I thought I was satisfied until yesterday. I went to BB to buy Ghostbusters. I chose the 4K disc because it came with a bluray 3D disc. Now I'm thinking how nice it would be to have a 4K player and of course a 4K TV. I may be able to hold off for a while but I have a feeling my symptoms are returning. $26 is going to cost me a whole lot more down the road.....🤔

Well, I'm afraid I have infected a close friend of my mine. My brother warned him that I was sick. All I did was recommend that he go to my dealer for speakers instead of one of the big box stores. He went looking for bookshelf speakers and a budget of $200-$300 dollars. He ended up with B&W 685's. That's about $500 over budget. Now he's talking about a sub and a new AVR. Officially infected.
On a side note, my symptoms seem to get worse around my birthday which is Monday. I'll be at my dealer purchasing a Bluesound Pulse Mini for my bedroom.

LOL...good story and funny you mention spreading the disease. That Bluesound Pulse Mini system is pretty cool, sounds GREAT, has all the right features for a minimalist but good system.

One of my male cousins had come over my house in January to sharpen out cutlery in exchange for me doing some upgrades to his equipment. He heard my new system. A week or two went by and he calls to ask about upgrading his 5.1 system. He then went from mismatched mains, surrounds and center to matching his Klispch R-25C with a pair of R-24F. Another couple weeks go by and I sell him my SVS SB1000 sub as an upgrade to a little Polk. (I had bought a PB2000 for my son and took the SB2000 he had.) My cousin then orders a pair of R-14M surrounds.

Everything seems OK, then the display on his Denon S700 receiver goes out, so off to Denon for warranty repair. He starts asking about my NAD receiver. Gets the Denon back and then decides the R-24F just aren't his thing. Off to the audio shop, listens to Paradigm Prestige 75F, Klipsch RP-280F, and PSB Imagine T. Went home with the PSB (demo model) for 1/2 the cost of the Paradigm. He then picks up a used trade-in Anthem MRX710, and sells the R-24F pair and Denon to his brother. Me and my son go over there and get him all hooked up with his Panny plasma. Sounds better in his room than they did in his younger brother's house.

Now he mentions his sister and her husband might be looking to upgrade from a Bose Wave/CD player. I invite them over to my house and I chose a couple classical and jazz tunes for them to hear. While they're listening I ripped a couple CD's they brought with my Bluesound Vault. (He's got over 1500 jazz CD's at home.) They are shocked that the CD's they brought were now so easy to access with the iPad they brought, and SO much more music in them than they'd ever heard before. We discussed what my system was and cost, and what they could budget. I saw photos of their space, had never been there.

Off to the audio shop, auditioning Totem Arro and Sttaf, plus B&W 685's and CM8, and Paradigm 75F. We also auditioned an Anthem receiver and an NAD C326BEE. Then a C356BEE. They went home with the demo model C356BEE for cheap, a new Bluesound Vault 2, and the demo model Totem Sttaf. I followed them home and set it all up, including his old Yamaha CD changer. I was shocked at how much better those Totem Sttaf sounded in their home. This was a Sunday afternoon. By Tuesday they placed an order for a new pair of those Totem Sttaf. She's been ripping all her classical CD's, they get the new speakers in two weeks. They are just in heaven, and I have to agree they nailed it for sound quality that belies what they spent. It's just breathtaking because they didn't even know it but their space has perfect room treatment already with full bookshelves right where they need to be.

Now I've gone and bought two Bluesound Node N100 (original version) streaming players over the past 3 weeks. One is in my upstairs bedroom, the other getting sent to my brother in NC for a long-distance infection. He should have it by the end of next week. He'll hook it up to his Onkyo receiver and B&W 685's. I'll work on developing the disease remotely, but will visit him in Durham NC in January for his birthday to make sure he's afflicted. Next up will be my sister and her husband who just sold their house and bought a condo. They don't know yet that they need a music system, but will soon learn.

Great story, especially the ending. I was looking up the word emporium one day and they gave an example of how the word is used:an emporium for home electronic equipment filled with stuff I didn't know I needed but now desperately want. I nicknamed my home theater the Sound Emporium from that day forward. That's why my brother tells people to stay away from me.

I picked it up today. Initial setup went well connecting to my network, but then both iPhone and iPad apps crashed and couldn't see my pulse mini or my vault 2. Put in a ticket with Bluesound but I managed to resolve the issue myself. Simply had to unplug both devices and now I'm in business.
Now for first impressions: Played Steely Dan FM and Miles Davis The Doo-Bop Song. This little speaker is very detailed, plays very loud and is meeting all of my expectations. I played it in my theater room (14'X28' and 8' ceiling) and it filled it with unbelievable loud and clear music. This speaker will be more than enough for my bedroom which is smaller than my theater room. It's big brother (Pulse 2) would have been overkill.
Going to take it to the bedroom tonight and fall asleep to some nice soft jazz. I'll probably try the sleep timer and set an alarm for the morning. May report more tomorrow after I've played with it for awhile. Thanks for asking.
Side note: considering a node for my second zone speakers and turning it into a dedicated two channel listening area.
Seems like every time I go to my A/V store my disease gets worse 🤒

There's a Powernode (original version) on eBay for $300. It's a pretty good deal and I know the seller has a good reputation. Other Node N100's there around $250-$300 too, but I appreciate the form factor of the Node2 better. I may upgrade the Node N100 I have upstairs soon.

Congrats on the Pulse Mini, glad it's all working well for you!

What kind of help do you need? I could find a good home to donate some of those floor standing speakers if that's what you need!

So I see a lot of speakers. Do you have them installed somewhere now or are you still in the collecting phase of the illness?

LOL... actually, they are all being used in 2 systems. 5.1 upstairs and a 7.2.4 system downstairs.

I have to be done because I am running out of space.

My girlfriend came over with a Bluetooth speaker for my bedroom a couple of weeks ago. When I took some birthday cash and purchased a pulse mini, she didn't understand. So today I cranked up the mini. She took her speaker home afterwards. I told her to leave the electronics to me. 😂😂😂 While I may have a problem, at least I'm functional 😉

Just spent the last "few" minutes reading this entire thread. And I too am content ... for now.

KEY words - "for now."

All my bills are paid for this month (I think) and tomorrow is payday, hm-m-m-m-m-m. Might have to re-think the "for now" portion. I/we do need some bass traps and other room treatments, also a new tt cartridge (which may mean a new phono pre) is needed and .....

Now just have to decide is it a need or a want? Guess the wife will have to help me decide that.

Apple from the tree

So I spent a few days this week helping my son install a modest 5.1 surround sound setup. Yamaha AVR, Polk audio HTIB, Samsung 4K TV and a Panasonic bluray player(donated by me).
So we go to Bestbuy to pick up a Logitech remote. On the way out he pauses to look at some tower speakers, turns and looks at me and says,"I'll have to get something like this later down the roadster I get my 4K player."
At that point I realized, he may very well have the same disease that I have. I almost shed a tear😓
Side note: He's got 4K and I don't. I'm starting to feel feverish 🤒

I had been behaving myself and this horrible person on audiogon listed a beautiful pair of revel salon speakers v1 for a more than fair price and to make matters worse he only lived 20 minutes away!! It had to be an omen, the result I now sport a full beard, wear the same pajamas all day every day, only come out of the basement to eat or relieve myself and am shopping again for sota amplification to match my speakers.mmmmmmmmhmmm...I dread the day my boss notices i'm not at work and comes looking.

Wow, what kind of evil lurks on Audiogon, eh?

My form of the illness metastasized. Last week I went to my dealer and paid for a pair of KEF Q300 speakers...and had them shipped to my brother in Durham NC to replaced the B&W DM300's he has and thought he was happy with. I saw the plastic back panel and crispy look woofer surrounds when I was there on New Years' Eve and figured I'd better send aid.

Alas, I too am falling prey to the omens of Revel center channels popping up for sale! I've been waiting to pull the trigger on one of these to go with my original Salons. No sooner had I posted a want-ad on this site than another member answered. And they only live a couple hours away! Pull, pull, pull!

Well.... Well.... I did it again. Upgraded from my wonderful Sony VPL-HW30ES to the JVC DLA-X570R. I just said about a year ago that I would NOT go 4k until they dropped to the $4K range. Definitely wouldn't go faux-k because my Sony looked just as good. THEN, I continue reading on Facebook and other forums of how much better their images were and I just HAD to go to Best Buy to get a demo. Thank you BROTHERS and SISTERS for your support.

I think there is no hope for me, for the rest of you run away!

It started simply enough, my sons left the house and my audio gear that was boxed and stored could now live again without fear of teenagers. Pulled out the pile of equipment and speakers--pondered a few things...hmmm. I have a background in car audio and PA gear from the 90's, I could build some surrounds out of the kid proof speakers...have that amp laying around to drive subwoofers....hmmm. Announce to the wife I'm going to build an HT system out of stuff I have laying around--and SAVING money!

Built the surrounds, it was OK...need more bass...built a sub but saved money because I already had a monster amp. (denial is setting in) Now to build a center channel, drivers, caps, coils, resistors, some more tools, wood etc. show up in the garage. Reading books, measuring, testing and a few revisions later...done!

It would be great to have a good sound system in the garage, have an old receiver laying around...a few years later and line arrays with dual subs are in the garage. Speakers can be ugly in a man cave--for the win! Project is complete, works far beyond what I needed in the beginning though...

Uhhh, geez...wish I had more efficient mains--build new mains! Hmmmm, need more bass so there are three sheets of ply in the garage and subwoofer drivers sitting there. My excuse is you can't buy end tables with subs built in, have to build them that way for my wife ya see... this is going to kill the summer.

Of course the center is not as efficient as the mains--yep, project next year is a 98 to 99dB 1w/1m center channel to fit the existing furniture--for my wife's aesthetic tastes of course. My original center I built fits the furniture perfectly so the new center will have to fit it perfectly as well. (Set a precident) Then those original surrounds will have to go, time to retire them in a year or two so the new ones besides easily hitting reference levels and sound cleaner--I can build them and paint them to match the walls--for my wife, of course!

So I should be done in 2018, after 8 years I should be content--at least with the speakers/subs/AVR that is. Of course, the AVR has all the stuff for 4K so might need to use that capability with 4K BluRay and maybe a new TV. Have the audio finished, might as well bring the video up to snuff!

I do know there is an end in site, my 2012 to 2015 years were spent getting the man cave to become a night club. I don't think once I'm done with speakers/subs/AVR from 2016 to 2018 that I'll need to mess with the array/sub system in the garage.

Of course, to upgrade the TV and Blurays to 4K, I could put the old TV/bluray in the garage and run 2.2 stereo--close enough. Well, maybe put a center in there for the Super Bowl...man cave 3 channel... yeah.

Run away!

Looking at downgrading my sub as my DD15 amp died and upon repair only lasted an hour before dying again.

I guess $675 in repairs at a factory approved repair center isn't what it used to be.

I'll give them one more shot under warranty before asking for my money back and moving on.

Assuming the DD15 is toast it'll be a sub with about 1/4 the MSRP.

Rhythmik F12.

I think there is hope for me.

No there isn't.
You're going to want two.

Well JVC has vastly superior black levels and contrast... So I think it was a good purchase after all
