I thought I would share this process separately here so that others on strict budgets may be able to benefit as well.

I installed a second row bar about 20 months ago and it was one of the best decisions I have made in my theater. Because of budget concerns I when I built it I used MDF and painted the surface. Although functional, the bar top has been something I have not been proud of.
I have had many quotes to have a 10’x17” slab of granite installed however I haven’t been able to justify the cost. I recently got a quote from Home Depot to have a custom laminate counter built and installed for $250. I thought this was the way to go to have a finished surface and still stay on budget.
A friend explained that when a customer buys granite counters that many times they have to pay for the entire slab and the installer is left with the extra material. This is called a remnant…
As a last ditch effort yesterday I posted this on craigslist.

Install your remnant granite On my bar top - $350

Do you have a black or a dark remnant of granite laying around from a previous job? I have a bar top that needs it! The bottom line is I am about to order custom laminate counter from home depot for $250. I am willing to give you up to $350 installed for your black granite. Contact me by 5pm Wednesday the 16th or I will order my custom laminate and move on.

Width 17"
Length 10' 1"

Finished front edge ( bullnose, waterfall ect)

Respond by email with a contact number and I will contact you asap

Its Monday morning now and I have already talked with two installers that have options for me to choose from. If you are in the same boat as far as budget and need to have a granite surface this may work for you as well.

Wow, that's a great idea. I wish I would have thought about that before I installed my quartz bar top in mine.
Thanks for the tip!

I cant seem to capture the true color of the granite. Oh well here it is, and we are very happy with it. I love the 2" strip that was added to the bar to keep plates or whatever from being knocked onto the theater chairs in front of the bar.
