Booker's Small Batch 2015-05

Just bought my first bottle of American bourbon. Saw many current batch 2016-01E but not this 2015-05. Anyone has had this before?

New but small American Whiskey Family

After acquiring my first bottle of American whiskey (been a Scotch-only guy), I scored two more and made it a small family. Waiting for a good occasion to open three at the same time for comparison.

Any suggestions to expand this new family?

I've just been getting into scotch's over the past year. I've really liked Balvenie of the one's I've tried. What's your go-to scotch in the $50 range?

For that price range (I assume it's in US$), I'd tried GlenMorangie 10, Glenfiddich 12 and GlenDronach 12. They are all good for value. If you want peated, suggest to Laphroaig Quarter Cask.

Awesome thanks! Ive definitely enjoyed the peat from the Isley scotches like Laphroaig quite a bit. Didn't realise there was one in my price range!

I find it odd that it's $40 more than my go to SC that's 10 y/o...so it Better be Fantastic.

Tasting Notes

PioManiac, in case you aren't aware of, the GD 11 YO #4007 and 10 YO #1598 are on sale at Liquor Depot at $80 and $60 respectively.

If you have to pick only one, which one will it be😃

I love this thread on the forum but I'm so constantly reminded of why I wish I lived closer to Alberta. Sales all the time and things like age statement Bruichladdich's showing up at Kensington Wine at reasonable prices. Sigh, just a little too far.

I did pick up a bottle this week when I was in Saskatchewan though. Generally I regard Saskatchewan as just about the worst place (B.C. might be just as bad) to buy Scotch in Canada. But while picking up a six pack of Pilsener (it's a retro, teenage memory thing, the beer sucks frankly) I took a look at their Scotch collection and came across the Glenfarclas 15 y.o. I've had and enjoyed the 12 y.o. Glenfarclas though it's very light; a perfect breakfast whisky if you will. So when I noticed the price was only $79 including taxes I was rather intrigued. We don't have it locally and that's a little less than the 12 y.o. sells for locally after adding the taxes I thought I'd give it a shot. Then today I was looking at the LCBO site as I'll be in Ontario next week and they are selling it for $109 plus taxes Pretty good deal I'd say.

Got some road trips in the future so should be able to stock up in the next few months again. But most will be by air and/or into the U.S. so I'll have to contend with customs limitations as well. No trips into Alberta in the foreseeable future unfortunately (until May probably).

How would you compare the Glenfarclas 15 to GlenDronach 15?

You already have one of each don't you?
Crack em open and decide for yourself

Honesty, in a blind taste test I doubt many could tell one from the other so save $20 and get the 1598
The 4007 is slightly better, but more like $5 better...definitely not $20 better.

I noticed the 14 y/o Virgin Oak is on for $58 again too, all three are in the Close Out section

http://www.liquordirect.ca/Clearance...=&productType=

...but as Mo mentioned, I REALLY like the $43 price drop on the 20 y/o Bruichladdich

I've been on the wagon for a bit over a month now,
started working out again (rarely happens in the Summer)

But what really killed my booze budget ....
I recently had to replace a water heater, Kitchen fridge and my man-cave bar fridge.

I was happy to find the Marshall Stack replica mini-fridge on sale.
They came out about a month or two after I bought my crappy Danby
Always wanted one ever since, I'm a bit of a guitar nut....so was kind of happy when the Danby died.

Goes to 11

Think I'll fill this one with beer until my bank account recovers
Still saving up for a new 4K projector this fall to replace my 8 y/o Epson 1080UB.

I still have the popcorn machine, just moved it behind the curtain
into my storage space (along with the dead Danby)

Cool

After a GlenDronach Sherry Single Malt overload lately I was craving a peated Scotch for a change,
...and was shocked to see Laphroiag Quarter Cask jumped from $44 to $64 at Superstore

I left the store empty handed.

Then I remembered a small independent shop where I often found some choice Single Cask GD's.
They had a Cask Strength Batch 4, a 19 y/o Madeira finish, and one I have never seen, a GD Peated!

it was the cheapest of the 3 so it was meant to be

...it's primary aging was in a Bourbon cask, then finished in a PX Sherry cask.
All good for me and just enough peat to make it a little more complex, without being over-powering
...no where near as heavily peated as Ardbeg or Lagavulin/Laphroiag.

Pio - Is Glendronach sold in the states? I have never seen it, but I can't say I have looked hard.

If so, what would be a good bottle to get for a new scotch drinker? The only scotch I really drink is Macallan 12. Typically I drink bourbon......thanks!

It's available in the US, and all around the world.
You may have to seek out a specialty shop if it's not popular in your area though.

Start with the 12 y/o original (red tube/label) its comparable to a Macallan in profile.

Yesterday whisk(e)y buying spree

Got some unexpected money and went out to score these non Scotch, non GlenDronach stuff. Excited but have to wait until finishing the 4 currently opened bottles before cracking any one of these

PS. Also got one High West Midwinter Night's Dram Act 3 Scene 2, not in the picture

Couldn't agree more on the 12 YO Original. It has full favor albeit a little younger and a tiny bit of less complexity than the 15YO Revival.

I still see them selling for 50 loonies at Superstore in the cowtown

Last weekend I found one more 16 y/o Nadurra bringing my total up to 6
they are getting harder to find now though

it was on my home from Long and McQuade for another guitar hanger (that I finally got around to putting up)
I also found a little mini-marshall stack that matches my Fridge, How could I resist ...for just $59

I was confused by those thick books on the shelf. Upon closer inspection, I give full approval!

(not that I'm against books, but it looked like you were keeping dictionary printing companies alive!)

Still see quite a few of Nadurra 16 Batch 0814D here in the Cowtown, asking for 80 to 86 bucks.

That's a great price!

I'm recently spending on American whiskey more than Scotch. For the price, I can get more by looking to Booker's ($72), Rare Breed ($46) and Knob Creek Single Barrel ($60). A bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel ($80) surely trumps many Scotch in the same price range.

I asked for a discount if I bought all of them

But agreed to $70/bottle

Hey Mo'

I can't recall of you had one of these in your collection or not,
Was going to ask your opinion first but since there was only two left I just took a gamble.

12 y/o Sauternes Finish

It's pretty darn good for a fruity single malt...
