Just went all in, with a LG 42LB6300. Talked a Best Buy sales guy into testing
my usb jump drive with some posters I stuck on there, for test purposes.

He had a sale at TEST 1, and TEST 6 was icing on the cake. This is a seriously
cool project if anyone is considering it.

If anyone wants some 1080x1600 posters to try out, send me a personal message.
(AVS will down rez these, so you won`t see the native resolution of these.)

And success.

I have settled on doing lots of themed folders, with varying amounts of folders.
(Looks like a 16G jump drive could hold 50,000 posters!)

The same poster might exist in several folders. As an example, I can see where
the Star Wars poster ends in a FAVORITE POSTERS folder, a STAR WARS
themed folder, and maybe in an ACTION folder.

If anyone has any ideas on this, I'd love to hear them.

Those posters are looking great, very nice work.
And having several folders is a great idea.

Suggestion... with more and more ppl using TVs for this purpose, it'd be great if there was a database where to share posters with the community.

Been kind of thinking along those lines, and maybe building a small server to share.

I have zero Photoshop experience so can anyone tell me how to create a clear background and add
lettering on top? (Or in GIMP, which I do have a little experience with... ) I want to import the
1080x1600 images into the uppermost of area of the 1080x1920 panel, and do a "blurbage"
window (Coming Soon, Feature Attraction...) and subdivide the hdtv into two panels by wood
framing out the hdtv.

"Old School" style posters look great too!

Just open PS and create a new project. Then give it the size of 1080x1920 pixels. Also check off transparent. Then open your poster and select all, copy, paste into your project. Then do as you wish.

I've also come up with combining 1080x1600 artwork with a single color lower
1080x320 panel approach. This panel would back light a cut out "Now Showing"
message.

The high end option could be a cut metal plate, while the DIY route, would be MDF.

I do have a 3.5 HP router, so maybe a routed aluminum plate might be an option?

This design does pull a lot of cool ideas from bluer101's digital light box.

A couple of "proof of concept" test files.

I think the Star Wars Darth Maul one could look very cool, with the light saber
glow back lighting the lettering. So I can see where my limited editing skills
could use some upgrading.

Picked up two OOK Hangman 12" aluminum cleats yesterday, for hanging. And
looked at some 2" and 3" lettering stencils. Thinking I might go with a MDF test
panel mock up before committing to a panel design. I also picked up a $25 Harbor
Freight laminate router for another project, but it might work well for hand routing
letters in MDF. (MDF does take a black piano finish very nicely.)

I also have some Corian sheet material in the garage, so that might be an optional
panel material, DIY or water cut.

Found another excellent (and free) source for posters.

http://www.joblo.com/movie-posters/

And I sourced a piece of 1/4" aluminum plate. Need to find out
what file format I need and to do a computer layout to have the sheet
water cut.

And it sure looks like it'll be a great year for movies.

Have not been using the poster frame at all. Right now I might reuse the tv for my patio bar build since it's one less thing I have to buy.

Then down the road maybe build another poster frame. IDK yet.

That makes perfect sense.

I have nailed down dimensions of the aluminum face plate and have found a local business
that does watercutting. Currently working on building the wood frame and converting my dimensions
to a DxF or dwg vector file in Ai or eps. That's a whole new learning curve... (Might source that out.)

If and when you are ready to get back in, and into 1080x1600 posters, then get a hold of me. I'll share my
poster library (which is currently around the 2500 mark).

I've ripped 3/4" plywood strips to glue up, to tightly frame the hdtv. And then I
use my DeWalt Track Saw to rip the final outside size, and then veneer the edges.

Two layers of 3/4" and that should float the hdvt off the wall 1/2" for ventilation.

I'll use some Connector cap and bolts to sandwich the aluminum plate to the wood
sub frame. Might epoxy the bolt to the back side of the aluminum plate, or simply expose
the cap on the face of the plate.

The final look will be like the Framed 2.0

Just uploaded 1700+ movie posters to a Google Drive account, to share, if anyone wants 1080x1600
digital posters for a digital movie poster box.

More to come too.

I would be interested.

I'm not using the tv as of now. I ended up getting a free bigger tv given to me from one or my residents. It is a Sony 52xbr4. The tv had a yellow tint to it so I opened it up and found the white backlight panel was yellowed and brittle. So I got some plexi and wet sanded both sides to diffuse the backlight. All back together and it's perfect again.

Cool!

Just personal message me an email account and I'll set you up. You don't need a Google Drive
account to download posters. You will receive an email with the file share access.

I also plan on additional folders, and adding many posters. I already have 22 more, and 700+ in a
queue folder to resize/cut to 1080x1600.

Testing with stencil style 2" tall lettering, to lock down dimensions.

The poster quality is excellent, but the camera wants to interact with the display, and the resize didn't
help either.

And the 1080x1600 poster count is now north of 3,000.

Tedd,

Fantastic work running with this. I picked up a 42" LCD to build one of these as well, and hope to get it together soon. Would definitely be interested in access to your google drive collection, but don't have quite enough posts to PM you. I'll be sure to reach out to you as soon as I cross the threshold

Keep up the good work!

Thanks.

I've sent you a personal message with my email address, so you can "short circuit" the "threshold".

I have my final measurements. Now to make sure if "SHOWTIME" is what I will go with.
"NOW SHOWING" was my initial thought, but many posters are "Coming Soon", so I made the
mask with "SHOWTIME" as it spaces out one letter shorter.

I'm also considering if I'd prefer to use a Sanus low profile wall mount I have sitting around. Looks like
I could simply shorten the horizontal plate that secures to the wall. Also working through details on the
best way to attach the hdtv, the aluminum plate, and the wood surround.

Thanks, I appreciate the "Bypass". Sent you e-mail.

In my opinion, "Showtime" feels a bit like an ad for the pay TV station, but that could just by my perspective. I would maybe go with "In Theater" or "Now Showing" or "Playing" or something like that, but then it isn't entirely suitable for stuff that isn't out yet. Interesting challenge....

For mounting I think I'm going to build a french cleat into the back of the frame/box I build for the TV so I can keep it as tight to the wall as I can. Will need to build in some space for the cord and airflow, but want the sides of the box to be completely flush to the wall as it is very visible where I am mounting it.

Wouldn't that be "SHOWME"? Or maybe it's a regional thing? (I'm in Canada...)

I was wondering if less letters is better. I do have 3" stencils, if I come up with something, I might
give it a test.

I bought two aluminum French cleats at Home Depot, at $10 each. Been cleaning
out the storage and found the wall mount though, so maybe....

I'll do the Google drive right now......

I built mine with French cleat as seen on the first page of this thread. I can easily lift mine off the wall in seconds to change the thumb drive.

Those wood horizontal braces, acting as French cleats, were very slick design.

Another option came up recently in pmeyer's thread, are the availability of these
vertical mounts. These could be good options, combined with a usb cable extender,
which could bring the usb port to the edge of the frame. If the poster box is mounted
at eye level, then a small recessed area on the top edge of the frame, could be a hidden
spot for a usb, and yet provide easy access.

Still interested in hearing any other suggestions for the blurb line. I think I it's "SHOWTIME"
but I have a feeling there's something even better out there....

I have not gotten around to add the usb extension yet.

My total frame with French cleat is less money than that mount and it's totally flush with wall.

I thought about adding a cooling fan to the top of the case pulling air out too.

A quickie video showing off how the internal slideshow + usb displays. The quality sucks,
but it does give an idea of how the KISS approach works.

Google drive upped the storage to 15G, so I am building a 4K poster database also. I thought I'd throw up some 4K posters,
and have a look at their file size.
